22" 45-70 or BC??
« on: March 09, 2006, 05:01:24 AM »
So here's my dilemma.

I'm getting a 45-70 barrel for my Survivor.  I am looking to make this a good elk/ moose/bear gun to take on a Canadian hunting trip as either a back-up for my 7mm mag, or as my primary (if my father wants to borrow my mag).

My main question is which barrel do I get?

The 22” would be nice for humping around with, but the BC should be more accurate and have more velocity (longer range).

Does anyone know the weight difference of the barrels only?

What about recoil?  Is one better than the other?

I plan on mounting a 2-7x40 scope on it, so I need to keep that in mind.

Which scope rail should I get the Ultra or the standard?  What is the difference?

Will I need to drill and tap either or both of these barrels?

How do you fill the front dovetail on the BC?

Sorry for so many questions in one post, but I know you guys can handle them pretty easily.

Thanks,

Not necessarily more velocity, depends on the load. My 2400+fps Nosler partition loads only increase about 25fps in the 10" longer barrel.

Does anyone know the weight difference of the barrels only?

I don't have a scale, but I'd guesstimate that the extra 10" weighs about a pound or slightly less.

What about recoil?  Is one better than the other?

Given the same load, the little extra weight of the 32" barrel is going to reduce recoil some.

Which scope rail should I get the Ultra or the standard?  What is the difference?

I see no advantage to the Ultra rail in mounting a small scope, the extra inch provides easier mounting of long scopes, go with the standard rail.....for the Swift 2-7x40????

Will I need to drill and tap either or both of these barrels?

They both come drilled and tapped

How do you fill the front dovetail on the BC?

This is what I used on mine.

Big brother has one of each & we have shot & hunted with them some. For
most hunting you will be more pleased with the 22". Keep in mind that the
longer barrel does not give you much in a big bore moderate capacity
round like this as quicktoo has shown. It may help a little more with some
heavy bullet loads but it won't be much. We cut down a 444 Marlin barrel
once (6"cut) & the difference was about 30FPS with 265GR. loads.
Also, I like the butt stock design better on the reg. 45-70 for a scope.

RW, I should mention that the 22" comes with either iron sights or a standard scope rail, no extra cost unless you want both. Just tell em you want no sights, but do want a scope rail instead. Best buy would be both for an extra $15. The BC barrel comes with no sights at all.
