Lapping a ML barrel?????
« on: March 05, 2006, 03:02:13 AM »
Could a person hand lap a ML barrel,with lapping compound,instead of having to shot lap it?{ by firing x number of loads}
Would not the act of hand lapping,debur it and smooth the bore quicker?
I got this idea from the many custom center fire rifle barrel makers!

I hand lapped my Encore last year. I was having one heck of a time loading Shockwaves/SST down my 209x50. I read that lapping the bore helped with this problem so I tried it. Much to my suprise it work well and the bullets loaded with much less exertion than before.

The method I used was JB Bore Polish  and a good tight fitting patch on a jag. I ran a patch with JB down the bore aproximately 100 strokes changing the patch and reapplying JB after every 5 strokes. Then cleaned the bore out with Shooters Choice followed by dry patches until the patch came out clean.

When I was done the bore had a mirror finish. Like I said the sabot loaded much easier. It was worth the effort. Accuracy improvement that I saw was negligable it was an accurate shooting gun right out of the box. Although the point of impact seemed to be about 3/4 " higher than it was before the lapping but that could have been me.

Good Luck

Try a gunshop instead of a sporting goods store. If you can't find it there. Order it online from Brownells.

Thanks, str8shooter48. I looked around in the yellow page and found a gun shop close here. I went there and they got some so I bought one. I did some lapping on the barrel that night and the bore looks really smooth and clean now. I can't wait to go try my muzzy.
