More Mt. Lion and Bear problems in communities
« on: August 15, 2006, 08:05:48 AM »
Yreka police responded to a report of a Mt. Lion in town the other day.  Sounds like a repeat of events from last year.

Down in Nevada, Placer, and Eduardo County’s there has been a number of Mt. Lion sighting in towns and nearby sub divisions.  I believe a Lion was killed in a yard in the Colfax area.

The bears up at Lake Tahoe have made the news.  I must admit the pictures of the bear in the seat of a restore red convertible were cute.  Also the tape of the bear running down a hallway in casino in S. Lake Tahoe was rather cute.  It appears the bear management plan must be working.

Hopefully hunting license funds are not being used to deal with Mt. Lion funds.  Being that Lions cannot be hunted in California it would be fraud on the part of the Fish and Game to use money generated from the sales of hunting license and tags on Mt. Lion management.  Nor should funds generated from license and tags be used to deal with bear problems in the Lake Tahoe Basin.

I don't know how they do it in CA but in CO they trap the town garbage can bears and dump them in the  in the  nat'l forest.  The hunters and campers have to contend with them tearing up their camps and chasing the kids.  When the campers get fed up and rectify the problem, the Fish & Game folks scream "trophy bear shot out of season" and that's an automatic large fine.   I suspect it makes law abiding citizens do unlawful things. (like shoot up, shovel up, and shut up)

In California the F&G has changed tactics.  They have known for years that moving the bear just moves the problem.  A bear that broke down fruit trees in Southern California foothills was moved to the top of the Serria's thirty air miles from Lake Tahoe.  It broken into a resturant, after hitting all the garbage bins and had to be destroyed.  It was one big fat boar who had grown fat on fruit.  Another fat bear was moved into the mountains and killed a bunch of sheep.  I heard the State may have been sued over that one.

Moving a bear does not do a lot of good.  Many of our bears have a 100-mile range depending on the food source.  In a campground they range from one garbage can to the next.  Ice chest and cars are a oppertunities for a foraging bear.

I understand the F&G tries and get the property owner to put down problem bears.  They are not willing to take the heat from the do gooders.  So they entrap the good guy into be coming the bad guy by issueing a permit, and then let them take the heat from the do gooders. Not that the wardens are bad guys, just under manned, in a highly political issue.  They just took a lot of heat after killing river otters that had attacked a number of swimmers.  A lot of people claim the swimmers are invading the otters home.  They are to dum to realize that the lake is a man made impoundment approximately 30 years old.

A few years back a young mountain lion was capture in a tree in Auburn, CA.  The young cat was moved to a remote location in Yuba County.  The cat had a radio collar on it.  After release in travelled across the Scramento Valley to the West side.  After killing some sheep it had to be killed.  Managers were suprised how far it travelled in a short time.  I just had a memory flash.  In the area the young lion was dropped off a home owner had had a problem with lions killing her goats.  This resulted in two lions being killed.  I wonder if the goat killing lions had been dropped into that are by the F&G. ???

I again repeat myself from earlier post.  I would like to see them realease these lions and bears in Gold Gate Park, other Bay Area and Los Angeles area parks and areas such as Topanga Canyon, Bell Canyon, Muhholland Drive and Sylvia Park.  Let the people who pass the propositions stopping the hunting of lions and limiting the already limited bear huntin in California live with the problems they have created.  Just think the critters could take care of the booming deer, and wild pig populations in some of these areas.

Years ago a recreationist and his family were flagged down by a non-English speaking individual.  He was all bloody and carrying a lever action rifle.(I am amazed they stopped.)  From what they understood from his sign language was that he had killed somebody with his rifle and buried them.  The recreationist made a direct trip into town and reported the incident.  The sheriffs department got out the SWAT team and the area was closed off.  The SWAT team found one shook-up sheep herder, who killed a bear which killed a large number of sheep for fun.  The sheep herder was bloodied from giving first aid to some of the sheep.  He had buried the bear, but thought he better report it.

An old story that I heard.

In Montana, a mountain lion was seen next to a school playground watching the kids, (shopping for lunch).  The school put a high fence around the playground.  An old local seeing the fence going up, shook his head and said, " What are we comming to when we start caging our kids and let the mountain lions run free".

Juust saw a news report where back east, a mountain lion jumped through a window into a person's house - seems the person was in the house.  He bailed out and after a standoff with police, the lion jumped through a screened window escaping into the woods.

And now they have psycho killer racoons.  Seems a pack of about 10-12 racoons have decided to eat dog and cat instead of natural food. A woman, hearing her cat scream went outside and found three racoons dragging it into the bushes.  She intervened and was bitten.  She now is undergoing rabies treatments.  It seems that the little fellas have lost their fear of humans and have decided that eating off the fat of the human is better than the fat of the land.  cheeky little devils

A friend who lived in S. Cal years ago told me that late one night Animal Control personnel from the City of Pasadena were observed unloading a truck load of raccons and other critters that they had captured in the City.  They had gone up the Mountains and dumped the critters in a campground.  Now they were some one elses problem, and they smelled like roses.
I guess they have the same morals as those who dump garbage along side the road.

Hey if anyone knows (or if gun sees this post) where does he live?  I live in a suburb of Sacramento and at the edge of the wooded draws that come up out of the American River basin.  It's crossed my mind more than once that a lion could end up in my condo complex due to good cover and a boat load of stupid  turkeys around.

About these mountain lions and bears:  Anytime we humans are taken out of the food chain, these predatory animals lose their fear of us.  I read an article in the paper some time back about a lion chasing some kids at a bus stop!!!!  Now, I know we humans encroach on their land more and more but I see no apparent reason we shouldn't be allowed to hunt them and many reasons why we should.  If there are huntable numbers, and apparently there are, then people should be hunting them to keep them in check.  Otherwise, the kids at the bus stop need to be protected by an adult with a firearm.  I think this whole thing about not hunting these cats and bears is just ludicrous and those who pass wildlife bills into law should first be made to consult the departments of wildlife before doing so.  They are the experts, not the politicians and the bunny huggers.

The state of CA recomends you sprinkle hot pepper dust on the gardens to keep the deer in check. guess i will have to start dipping the cat in tabasco too.   D.C.

It might be a better idea to just have your state make a law that say's wild animals can't eat domestic animal's! Law's seem to work everywhere else. ::)
