Take a look at the first seven posts in http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=59825" target="_blank">this thread about carronades for commentary on the Hern "carronade."

Many, I believe MOST carronades had a loop cast under the barrel that mounted on a bar on the carriage as this on the Constellation in Baltimore.

The author of the book Artillery and Ammunition in the Civil War (Warren Ripley)states this to be a fact.

One problem with the carronade was the barrel center of gravity changes as the gun rotates causing a nose down condition after fireing.

This condition happoned on all below center trunnion pieces.

This is one reason for the loop cast on the barrel.
I don't believe the Hern barrel is a true Carronade.

If I am wrong in this belief, please correct me.

I agree with Kap, most were cast like the one in his photo.  However, there were some that had trunnions.  I haven't run across any drawings or photos of a carronade that looks like the one Hern Iron Works is making.  The main purpose of a carronade was to have a large bore short barreleld gun for smashing the hulls of ships at close range.  Grape shot worked well also.  Other advantages were relative small size fit better in confined areas and the barrel weight was less.

If I understand correctly that Hern is casting their barrels around a sleeve instead of pouring them solid and drilling and sleeving the bore I wouldn't want one of their guns for shooting.
