If you had to choose...
« on: July 28, 2006, 08:31:10 PM »
I've been shopping around for a new assault rifle, but have hit a snag. I know there's a big following of both types of rifles, and I don't want to start a heated debate, but I'm looking for opinions on what you would choose and why. My current choices are an AR style rifle or an AK. I like the thought of being able to swap out the uppers on the AR styles and turn it into a whole new work of art, but I also like the style of the AK and enjoy the VERY low cost of plainking ammo for 7.62x39 chamberings.

So, let the opinionating commence. ;D

For me the AR platform was the ticket. Started with two lowers and a M-4 style upper. Now I've added both 20" and 24" varmint uppers. Soon the brown truck will be delivering a 6.8 upper to it's new home. Not sure where it will end but it sure is fun. So my choice is  ;D AR  ;D.

I bought my first AR-15 in 2003 and haven't looked back. I absolutely love the AR platform. I've only shot one AK and didn't like it at all. Not that AK's aren't really good rifles, they're just not for me!  :)

Does the receiver come with the upper, lower, or is it entirely seperate from them both?

Normally my choice would be the AK, but based on information I recently received from an ammo dealer I think I would go with either the AR, or some type that fires the .308 ammo.  The 7.62x39 is at the higest price it has ever been, and expected to go even higher.

The cost of firing the SKS or AK is being driven up by the requirement for ammo in the middle east.  Iran is buying all it can get it's hands on in fear of war.  Producers are selling to them because they are paying top price and paying in gold.

Bottomline, we may see a dry spell in 7.62x39 ammo, so but something you can get ammo for.  There is plenty of 5.56 and 7.62 NATO (.308) out there, and the price is right.

I like 'em both, in different ways.

The AK platform is crude and heavy feeling, but it also encourages you to shoot it until your shoulder is sore.

The AR platform feels like higher quality and offers modularity, so you can get uppers in various calibers to scratch the itch.
