Slow match holders used below the weather d

Ok so the gunners on the weather deck used a boarding pike (short) to hold the slow match, what did they use on the lower gun decks? I saw a picture of someone with a large diameter pole about three feet long, but I question it's authenticity be cause had he fired the recoil would have maimed him.
I don't think port-fires are the answer as they spit hot drippings and sailors were barefoot.

I believe that they kept slow match in a tub on the deck with the lit end hanging over the side.
