Has anyone ever done any chrono work with the difference between a 15 inch 30-06 and 15 inch 300 mag?  I'm just wondering if there is any significant gain?  Would be a good research  project, too many deployment days, too few inport days...

If you want more poop in a handgun, then you need a bigger hole and more copper clad lead leaving the tube  :)  Me thinks a 35 whelen would be a much better choice then burning more powder outside the barrel of a 30 bore

My GUESS is that a 300WSM would provide more velocity in a 15" bl than either of the two. Efficient cartridges seem to be better suited to short barrels than less efficient cartridges.

A 300winchester short mag should not be shot in an Encore, should it? I think if one believes in what they read, teh 300 Win Mag will kick harder but it can't realize all the powder--therefore it will kick more, but due to inefficiencies, it will will be only a little faster. I also read that teh 30'06JDJ or 30'06 IMproved are actually faster than the 300 WinMag in a 15" barrel. I just ordered a 338-06 and am going to send it out for a ream to improved--supposedly gets another 150fps--we'll see. I have not chrony'd a 15" 300winmag, BUT I  have two- 30'06's and one is about 100fps faster than the other with identical loads??? So what did I do? I just set up different loads for each barrel. My fast barrel has a 180 NBT and 4064 going out 15' muzzzle at 2550. the 4350 load is 50fps slower but shoots sub-MOA. The 4064 si 1 to 1-1/2"er. This 180 load is practically teh same as a 180 load from a 308 winchester rifle. Cases drop right out too. no sticking, or other signs. I'm not sure, but I bet there are some 300 that won't be alot better (relatively) for teh difference in powder? IMHO-I think if you compare factory loads, the 300win mag will be beat the '06 substantially, which is a boon to the non-handloader. I'll bet the flame is impressive. I called TC--they will not chamber a 338 Win Mag--they said it kicks too much. I guess they never shot a 10" 444 marlin and 300gr cast loads!

I shoot a T/C with an SSK 14" barrel and no brake in 45-70. I have found that if you want to shoot jacketed bullets, the 350 H/P's and the 405 F/P's are very hard to beat. It is powerful and accurate. In the Encore with the 15" barrel you could possibly step it up a bit more. In the Contender you can load the 405's to some pretty impressive levels (power and recoil). Without the brake you get to enjoy it's full unencombered handgun potential. I would says it is probably the best 150 yard sledgehammer you can buy.

I am just now starting to get serious about playing with some cast 325 and 425 bullets.

I have a 14" SSK also and love it! I did get it mag-na-ported so I can shoot the bigger lead. I shoot 535 gr. with smokeless powder but try a 65gr load of black powder in it. Not a lot of bang but it hits hard and groups good at 100 yards.

I love SSK barrel also. Thanks for the tip on the black powder load - It never occurred to me at all, but it's a good idea. It may be something to try with paper patched bullets, that's been another itch here lately.

Thanks.
