Is your season over or just starting???
« on: March 13, 2006, 04:46:19 PM »
Things have been a little quite around here latly and I have read through all the back post on the board so I figured I would start a new thread.

Here in the western UP my season almost started over the weekend. We had two days of 45 degree's and the streams started to defrost a bit. You could see sign where the beavers had been out and crossing dams and ice. I scouted alot and have two sets out one for beaver and one for otter BUT today I woke to snow falling and here is is 16 hours later and we have 24 new inches of snow and it has not stopped yet.

So apparently my season is not started yet.

For now I am going to keep myself busy by cleaning up my work area's and working on getting 6 #4 Jumps ready just incase I need them.

Brandon,I spent 5 hours yesterday, digging out from 14 inches of the heaviest snow I have ever seen. The tree that came down,is resting right next to my truck.
I never plan on ice out till mid april in the north, sometimes later.
My guess is 2 or 3 weeks till things start down here, and later as I head north.
I just hope it isn't a may ice out this year.8 years ago it was may 13th.Needless to say, that year I didn't trap spring beaver in the north.

Most of my seasons are over up here, at least for me. I might do some spring beaver and muskrat if I get open water before the season closes. At that, I will probably try to set at least a few m'rat traps next week during spring break.

Took this Friday through Monday off. Beaver and Rat season runs until the end of this month. I didn't get much trapping in at all last fall or winter, so this little 4-day jaunt is my big hurrah for the spring ventures. Day one of course is just putting sets out, so I only get 3 check days pulling on the 3rd. Will try to put new sets out all 3 days going into Monday's final check/pull, too.
I'm not very prepared for this at all, didn't get any time to put up stakes or scout much. I did make sure to note all the huts on certain ponds when I was hunting pheasants this fall. Hopefully things are still where I think they are :)
Best of luck to anyone else out there still pounding it. I'll let you know how the little 4-day weekend is for me. They are talking about storms now for Sunday I see...of course...just when you try to plan something out ahead of time...

Aparently mine is just starting. Got my first beaver today after we got 27 inches of snow yesterday. :)

I have another thread posted with the details.
