I want to run some plinking SWC pistol bullets thru my .35 rem but I want to keep the velocities down so that I won't lead up the barrel. (non GC bullets) Can anyone tell me how to figure the conversion If 33 gr of Varget powder runs the bullet at 2096 fps then would I just back the charge down by 50%? Or would that be a squib load thanks

Gander,

Don't reduce a load of Varget by 50 %. Look in a load book that lists cast loads for the 35 Rem and follow the recipe. The Lyman book is good, also RCBS has a book out. If you can't get ahold of one of the load books, get on the internet and look at the powder company web sites and read their loading pages.

The only thing about recipes from the Lyman book are they are in Pistol powders. Like Unique for instance 9 grains compares to 4.5 for a pistol. This isn't the problem then I must fill the case with dacron correct??

I don't use a filler. I have done that before and it is alot of trouble for the results you get.

Tip the bore up, before fireing and get the powder stacked up in the case, nest to the primer. It will be accurate enough.

Try 10 gr of unique with a 158gr cast plain base bullet. That will get you about 1300 fps. You can work up, carefully, to 12 gr for 1600 fps with the same bullet.

Slower burning powders, like 2400 or either 4227 will use more powder and get higher velocities. The volume in the case may not be any greater than the Unique though. You probably don't want to shoot a plain base bullet much faster than 1600 fps anyway.

I use 12 gr of Unique with a cast plain base 150 gr bullet in my Model 94 30-30 and get right at 1650 fps. It is accurate and I get no leading.

If you are following the Lyman Manual for reduced loads for the 35 Remington, do not use a filler unless they specify it. All reloading manuals are getting away from the fillers anyway. Improperly used, they can cause serious side effects. If in doubt, DO NOT USE a filler. Those rifle primers will fire anything in that case. A practice is to raise the muzzle of the rifle before sighting to fire then pull the trigger. When you are consistent with this, you will have good results.

I'd really like to shoot cast myself. Are you guys buying your bullets or pouring them and could you recommend a bullet and or mold?

My experience has been that I can make better bullets than I can buy. That doesn't stop me from trying to buy some good bullets. I have partially used boxes of commercially cast bullets littering my reloading room, and ever now and then I will try a new load with them, but I just never have got them to work as good as what I can cast myself.

I shoot competitively against lots of guys that shoot commercial cast and really like them, but, I usually beat them in a match. Is it because I am a better shot or because I have better bullets?

I also have lots of molds lying around my reloading room. Some work well and some don't. I think it depends on the gun. Lots of people love the Lyman 311041. They have been sold for more years than I have been shooting. They don't shoot worth a darn in my gun. Mine likes the RCBS 30.8-180-fn. It looks almost the same. I get 4 to 6 inch groups at 100 yards with the Lyman and sub 1 inch groups at 100 yards with the RCBS.

Right now I shoot cast bullets in 3 Silhouette games. For NRA Hunters Pistol I use a Lyman 224450, single cavity in a Hornet. For Pistol Cartridge Cowboy rifle silhouette I use a RCBS 09-124-cn in a 357 mag Rossi 92 Rifle and for Cowboy rifle silhouette I use a 357-180-sil in the Rossi 92 and a Rcbs 30-180-fn in my pre-64 model 94 30-30.

Thanks I just so happen to have a pound of Unique sitting on the bench, I will have to try that. I have heard horror stories about that powder but all have said just to be careful with it a half a gr and make a world of diffrence.

The majority of my cast loads use 2400 or Unique. I don't use fillers and don't see a need to. For plinking I just cycle the action and shoot them without any problems. I don't load the 35 and don't recall what the Lyman manuals states on that caliber, but the above post suggesting around 10 grains to start sounds about right to me.
