Want to make my sks a paratrooper with 16 inch barrel, is it just a matter of knocking the pin out, heating the outer ring and pecking the outer last three inches of barrel off. Then repeating the procedure to get the sight off.

I've not done this but shortening a barrel is not a big problem. Making sure the weapon functions afterwards is, especially with a gas operated firearm. The danger is altering the port pressure curve. Which includes a pressure peqk and a duration. The duration is what would likely be compromised to most. Still I would advise info from someone with more experience with the sks than I. Keep us informed of your decision and the outcome.

One other caveat.. Don't cut that barrel too short. Sixteen inches is minimum for a rifle and I always like to leave a bit extra to keep UncleSugar a bit happier.

Took one a few years ago to local smith. Turned out ok. Spoke with him yesterday, he said it was a matter of knocking the pin out and then sweating that junction apart.

The problem with shortening an SKS barrel is if it's chrome lined. Cutting a new crown in a chromed barrel requires a carbide cutter. If it's not chromed, then it's no harder than any other barrel. The SKS's respond well to recrowning as the factory crowns are usually quite a mess.
