Explain this to me like I'm a 3 year old...
« on: March 17, 2006, 04:00:36 AM »
OK, I was looking in my reloading manual and I see that the 338 Win Mag is reloaded to the 52k-53k CUP range and my 270 is at 51k CUP.  I realize that the bullet face is larger but how dangerous is this really??  I know a guy who custom made a handi in 300 wsm and those loads come from the factory at over 60k psi and has plans to make a 300 ultra mag, 338 ultra mag and such.  He's fired approx 20-30 rounds through his 18.5" 300 wsm with no problems (yet).  Any thoughts??

Here are his words:  " THE SHOTGUN BARRELS ARE DONERS. I CUT THE LUGS OFF THE BOTTOM, MACHINE THEM FOR AN EXTRACTOR DETENT, AND WELD THEM ON A BARREL BLANK THAT HAS BEEN TURNED TO 1.120" THEN I ADD A 450 MARLIN EXTRACTOR WHICH FITS THE SAME CASE AS ALL THE ULTRA MAG CASES. YES MINE ARE TRUE BULL BARRELS THE SAME DIAMETER ALL THE WAY TO THE MUZZEL. THEN I ADD A FORTH SCREW TO THE SCOPE RAIL. THIS MAKES THEM VERY ACCURATE. MY 300WSM IS ONLY 18 IN. LONG AND STILL SHOOTS A 165 GR. BULLET AT 2800 FPS. I AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON A 300 ULTRA MAG., 338 ULTRA MAG.,  357 HERRETT, AND A 22 K-HORNET"

sorry for the all caps...

first thats a waist of barrel 18.5 inches of WSM mag is about the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

second don't be around him when he shoots it we want to keep you around.

a good rule of thumb " if it might get you killed don't try it"

It is supremely ignorant and I just hope that he and not some other unsuspecting person is the one who gets killed or maimed as a result. JD Jones of SSK will not even rechamber an Encore for the short mags and ultramags. He doesn't feel there is an adequate safety margin and the Encore is a stronger gun than the Handi no matter how much you guys like your Handi's.

Stupid is....as Stupid does....sound familiar...While his stubbing may work as a whole and the barrel might  not seperate and blow up..the frame will certainly stretch and become unuseable and unsafe..and very quickly. This has been tried before with the 300 Win Mag.....and has failed miserably....the bullet size hasn't anything to do with this..it's the case head size that does....and the Handi can safely shoot a 65,000 psi 270 load on a 30-06 class casehead..nothing larger...and the 300 WSM case head is MUCH larger...

Our Handi's are pretty strong as far as break actions go..but..they aren't falling blocks like the Rugers..and like Greybeard said..they aren't as stout as a Encore..

All the non standard conversions of Handi's must give some guys these dumb ideas. May the lord have mercy on them, because they do not know what they are doing.

With the popularity of the short mags, and the 300 win mag, why do you think that H&R doesnt make them. It aint cause they wont sell, its cause they would be dangerous. Id stay away form that guy when he shoots it.

EDIT: You wanted it told to you like a 3 year old, so here it is.

It is unlikely that a man this careless has a Will, but I would encourage him to whip one up.

Hay, I'm a .338 Win Mag kind of guy.  But not in my Handi, I like my head just as it is, I don't need it modified.  I'm happy with my .35 Whelen.  I've got a .338 Win Mag barrel for my TCR, and my Encore,  that's enough.  I carry my Handi in 06 as a backup, and for the little stuff.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I agree with cpj and rest of the members here. If it were a workable and safe  H&R would of had a 300 win mag on the market a long time ago, but they don't.  As spock from star trek would say "Captain there is a logical reason for this"

a few years back i was considering converting a handi over to the 6mm ppc. it wasn't until i looked at the bolt thrust this 'wimpy' cartridge produced did i back away.

the wssm's and other intense cartridges are for bolt guns and just don't belong in the handi action.

Hey, he asked for it.   :-D  Does this mean I should nix my .700 nitro handi project?
