7.62 X 39 in a Contender barrel?

Is it safe to shoot full-power 7.62X39 loads in the Contender?



Was looking at Bullberry's website and possible cartridge choices for custom barrels.  Will the Contender frame handle 7.62X39 pressures without stretching and getting ruined?

Full power loads, No. If you are going to use full house loads and/or shoot heavier bullets from it you need to go to an Encore frame.

7.62x39 is similar to 30-30

The only full-power 7.62X39 loads I know of are standard factory ones  

I didnt know the contender couldnt handle standard 7.62x39
123 grain bullets shooting out at 2400 feet per second.

Standard factory .308 winchester loads come out hotter than that.
150 grain bullets at 2800 feet per second

7.62X39 is similar to a .30-30!!??



Sorry friend, but that's a lot of rumor IMO.

The 7.62X39 operates at whatever pressure it does propelling a 122-125 grain bullet (usually .311 caliber instead of .308) at @2350-2450 fps.  That's SAAMI spec and what most commie's made their ammo to.

The .30-30 w/ 150 grain loads are often advertised at @2400 fps, but that's alledgedly with a 24 inch bbl in laboratory conditions.  Truth is that velocity is closer to 2200-2250 with those factory loads (and usually out of a 20" tube).  Handloaders can tweek either cart to whatever specs meet their needs.

Basically I believe in the laws and mathematics of PHYSICS.  The .30-30 is probably the closest popular round to mention when discussing the 7.62X39, but saying the .308 and .30/06 "are similar" is also quite relative.

Now if the 7.62X39 operated at the same pressures as the .30-30, the Contender would probably be plenty strong.  Unfortunately the G2's aren't any stronger than the original Contenders.

If not using standard pressure 7.62x39 loads, what speeds can you safely achieve with a 122-125 grain .311 bullet in a G2?
Im not a loader/reloader yet. I just hadnt been aware that you couldn't use standard factory 7.62x39 loads in a G2 like Winchester or Federal 7.62x39.
Now you got me wondering whether its safe to use standard factory .223 in my G2.

If TC chambers barrels for the round then factory loaded ammo is safe.  .223 is a popular factory chambering, so it is a good assumption that it is a safe load.

Look at the 7.62 x 39 as a rimless .30 herrett....
there just about identical....Use .308 bullets in
your contender..... :D

Cougar, if you know everything you said in your second post then why did you ask the question?

I once thought about a 7.62X39 barrel as and easier way to get 30herrett preformance without all the case forming. JDJones recomended against it. Regards, Byron  :D

I have a FOX RIDGE  7.62 x 39 ENCORE barrel. It has a .308 bore & is extremely accurate . I have only shot it at 100yards , but it prints MOA IF I do my part . Very mild recoil & a nice WT DEER cartridge out to about 125 yards - I wouldn't stretch it much more than that . You need to load for it as most ammo is .311/.310 . I use AA1680-& 125 gr SIERRA Spitzers in Lapua brass., clocks 2383 over my CHRONY.
All that bs said I WOULD NOT shoot it in the Contender UNLESS T/C or Fox Ridge made the barrel for it .( Mine is 20" SS -rifle )

I'd be glad to steer you to data if you buy one.

Just saw Pastorp's post.  not that his point makes any sense to me.



Only things I'm sure about regarding this post and the .30-30 and 7.62X39 is that one drives a larger-weight slug almost as fast as the other drives a smaller-weight slug.

Oh yeah, I do understand a little about the laws of physics, and still find it odd that Contender isn't strong enough to shoot the lighter round (with its greater PSI than the Contender frame must be able to handle? - I guess ...... ).

As for the .30 Herrit, those interested in wildcats can go have a good time.

As for the 7.62X39, its a reloadable standard/factory round often found in a gun store that components and dies don't need to be special ordered for.   :wink:
