First time poster and first time surplus rifle buyer. Bought m48 yugo mauser.(have been learning alot about cosmoline). I was wondering, I can buy surplus ammo about $80 per 900 and 50 mile drive what bullet weight works best.The ammo I am talking about is posted on aim's websight 70-80,s manufactured in yugoslavia. p.s. already looking into further surplus this rifle is in excellent shape. I purchased 900 rounds of the 70's Yugoslavian ammo from AIM and it shoots really good in my K98 Mauser. I can't tell you the bullet weight in grains but here is a 3 shot group from 100 yards that my son-in-law shot.

I don't know where you got your M48 from but I used my C&R for the first time and I wanted a M48 from AIM but they were sold out of them so I settled for a Yugoslavian 24/47. The ad says they are in excellent condition. I will find out shortly, it was suppose to be shipped out today(Monday). If it shoots as good as my K98 I will be very happy.

Thanks if mine shoots half that good I would be satisfied. I got my m48 from kentucky imports in louisville ky, they were at national gun day at louisville's fair and expo. I will look into a c&r later.

I think the surplus Yugo ammo manufactured in the 70s-80s may use 196 gn bullets. However, if she prints to the bull at 100 yds they may be lighter than that, maybe around 150 gn. I use Portugese surplus and Sellier and Bellot ball and soft point in my 8mms and they all use the 196 gn bullet. Both the later are reloadable. The heavier weight bullets usually hit higher at 100 yds due to the battle sight regulation on the mil-spec Mausers. HTH. Mikey.

All 3 of my turks will print to about the same point with 196 or 154 grain
at 100 meters. My k-98 actually prints lower with the 154?
Hakim eats both with equal enthusiasm and accuracy.

196 gr was the standard for the military ball ammo.

PVRI Partisan sells some soft pointed brass cased non corrosive 196 gr bullets good for hunting.

I have a case of the 1950's on stripper clips and it shoots VERY good in my M48a. I won't tell you how good because most don't believe me, but it is accurate.

Get it you won't be sorry.

P.S. it's corrosive ammo so after shooting flood your barrel and bolt and action with ammonia based windex to kill the corrosive effect of the primers then clean per usual.

I tell you what gentelmen, I am really happy with my Yugo M48A. I reloaded some 150 grain Sierra Spitzers and she is sub moa off the bench.

Happy Happy Happy. drove to aim and bought 900 rds. of the 70's(1977) yugo surplus ammo from aim. Raining so had to shoot from covered porch. broke orange clay targets at 135 yards. :-D . This was with my just finished m-48 and regular sights no scope(honest!!).

The most recent Shotgun News carried an article about a new 8mm semi-auto sniper used in Bosnia and the like. Seems PRVI Partisan is making the ammo - 198 gn boat-tail spirepoints softpoints I think - looks to be good quality ammo, new production and lots of it. Now, if we could just get some of that here it might help. Hey, a nice new 8mm semi-auto would also be nice too. JMHO. Mikey.

I got some PVRI Partisan 8mm ammo of which you speak.

It is 196 gr soft point, brass cased, non corrosive, reloadable ammo that shoots very well for me.

It cost about $9 for 20 rnds.

I got a velocity average of 2180 out of my M48a, and about MOA or better at 100 yards.

I have been following this thread and am a little concerned about one piece of advice that was handed out. Amoinia will not, absofreakenlutely NOT, dissolve or neutralize chlorite primers. Water will and so will GI bore cleaner which is 50% water. Windex will too because it too is 50% or more water. However, amonia will not. That being said, it does help dissolve copper fouling but only when it's in concentrations of at lease 3% or more with 5% being standard. I have been checking out this issue for quite some time and have come to the conclusion that Break-Free CLP won't dissolve primer salts either water is mixed with it.

i shoot a lot of the Yugo ammo as well as a whole bunch of CZ 7.65X54 stuff, all of which is corrosive. I also shoot some corrossive Korean '06 stuff too. The only 100% certain way to avoid damage to one's gun with this stuff is to clean using hot water and then follow with oil or Break-Free or whatever. That's my $.02 anyway. YMMV but I dout it. Go ahead and use Windex, it won't hurt but water is cheaper.
