Shelf life of MRE's?
« on: June 23, 2003, 09:03:41 AM »
I was wondering if anyone knew the shelf life of MRE's. I have a bunch that are about 2 years old.

Thanks,

Scott.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

lakota,

I was always told that MRE's are good for around 5 years. I found a website that also says around 5 years.
Here is the website    www.longlifefood.com
I hope this helps, and myself I love MRE's because I think they are about the best camp food out and the even have cold weather MRE's that you have to add hot water to.

Yep, about five years is the average "shelf" life before they're consumed, rotated or destroyed. Although about two years ago we cleaned out a stocked county storage locker of disaster supplies. I wanted the Army cots and wool blankets that were headed for the dumpster. Among the various emergency supplies were several cases of medical supplies and MRE's left over from the first Gulf War that were most likely aquired through State surplus. Out of curiosity I opened some up and found them to still be edible. None of the packets were swolen or bloated, a sure sign of spoilage.  The desert cakes were still moist as were most all items in the envelope. We picked through and kept a good number of items for ourselves. Hate to see stuff go to waste..

Well, it seemed like a good idea at the time....ES
