Trigger pull on H&R 17 HMR
« on: June 18, 2006, 03:53:21 AM »
I am giving my 17 HMR to my 13 year old son. The trigger pull seems fairly heavy. Has anyone pulled a trigger out & did some gunsmithing to reduce trigger pull?

Look in the NEF/H&R Centerfire FAQ and Helps sticky, there are links to home trigger job instructions there by Raynor and Perklo, many of us do our own, novices included!! If that doesn't suit you, have your local smith do it or send it to H&R, they do free trigger jobs if the pull is not below their threshold already.

I did the work on mine(NEF 17hmr Sportster) and reduced it to about 2 to2-1/2 lbs. with no creep.  I was some time ago but iI do remember it was not that difficult.  Look at the pins that go through the reciever, one holds the trigger guard in place and one or two hold the trigger group(parts).  They can be driven out carefully, keep track of what goes where. I stoned the contact points lightly and I believe I cut the spring a little.  If you have not done this type of work before and do not feel comfortable doing it bring it to a gunsmith.  Especially if a youngster is going to be using it.
