I hear all the time about people buying MSR's.Back in the '70s I was one
of those people.My question is this.What military surplus rifles have a
bolt action safety on it?My M 44 did'nt,my french 36 did'nt,my jap 7 and
5 did'nt.What does have a safty on it?

I like to start buying again.

Was your M44 a Mosin Nagant? If it was it had a safety. All of the Mosin's have a safety, as far as I know all of the Mauser's have a safety.

The 96/38 and 98 Mausers have a bolt mounted safety. The British service rifles have a safety. Some military bolts have a cocking/decocking lung on the rar of the firing pin assembly - the Brits have that and so do the Swiss on the K-31s. I forget whre the safety on the 03 or 03A3 Springfields are but they have one too. HTH. Mikey.

Of all of the rifles you've noted only one does not have a saftey, that's the the French MAS36

A lot of people may think that some of these rifles don't have a safety at all, as we are used to our crossbolts and switch safeties. I have an M38, and the safety was pulling the back of the bolt backwards, and turning it left, which locks the bolt back, a few rifles were made the same. Just a different way to look at stuff.

The French apparently felt that not havin' a round in the chamber was so safe, they didn't require the extra parts on the rifle to have one. :wink: I kinda agree. Although there ain't anything safer than the safeties on those Japanese Arisaka's.
