new 7.62 AK chambered handi
« on: March 27, 2006, 09:20:35 AM »
after a lousy winter, with nothing to do but wait for spring, i picked up a 7.63 x 39 handi at the local gun shop. paid $229 plus tax and shipping for it. it was a little bit cheaper at walmart and i probably overpaid but i refuse to buy anything at walmart any more. sorry, but walmart is nothing more than a retail outlet for china which is probably why they won't be selling handi's any more (well, maybe the pump...)

so the 7.62 x 39 looks like a overall lousy cartridge except maybe for interior ballistics. being the parent for a few good cartridges, it may have promise for narrow spreads in velocity, but i think it will end there.

the plan is to shoot cast 110 grain gas checked lyman spire points in this gun, i may also try the 130 grain round nose lyman still offers if i can't tame the 110 gr.

for optics, i picked up a "barska" 6-24 x 42mm varmint scope with a mil dot. keeping in stride with the 7.62 x 39 russian motif, barska sounded russian to me, but then i noticed the "made in china" declaration on the box after i got home. earler in the day i picked up simmons 30mm red-dot but the screw centers on the mount didn't line up with the slots on the scope rail.

this should be a fun spring project gun once i move back to the lake.

tnx tim!

it'll be a good project!

if anyone needs the info on the 7.62x39 barrel;

.300" bore

.310" land

9.45" twist  (??? got this from CS, doesnt sound right)

after i clean all the factory gunk out of the gun, i need to slug the barrel to see what the land diameter really is.

When the SB2-762 was first announced, I sent an email to CS asking what the twist rate would be, the reply said it would be a 1:9¾" twist rate, but  1:9.45" is pretty close.

you'll have to let us know how it shoots. I sent my handi off about two weeks ago to get a 7.62x39 barrel, and a 30-30 that is going to be turned into a 30-40 krag. I just hate the waiting.  I hope they have a quick turn around on it.

Wow!

I was just looking at one this morning in the local shop... it's been on the shelf for awhile, and as I was looking it over today, the owner said he'd sell it to me for $190!

So... once I got it home, I dressed it in a 1.5x-5x 32mm piece of glass and plan to spend some quality time with it this weekend.

 :)

So I take it as being closer to the correct .311 bore of the SKS/AKs not the.308 of the Ruger Mini-30 which means this rifle will safety, and accurately shoot imported surplus ammo.  I can still get locally WOLF 7.62x39 FMJ for $3.00 a box of 20 much cheaper in bulk.

The hard, recessed primers of a lot of the milsurp ammo don't shoot at all in the SB2-762, most everyone that has tried get no fires with it. Stick with sporting ammo or handloads and everyone loves em, tho.

this is just a thought of mine 9x19 but isn't your post kinda of a paradox? expensive rifle paired with cheap ammo, and cheap rifle(not thats a bad thing) with "expensive" ammo.

Paradox? Perhaps.... or a conundrum!  :-D
