Loads for hi-wall 45-90
« on: March 21, 2006, 03:17:10 AM »
Hi all
A friend of mine won a Winchester Hiwall 45-90 at a banquet Saturday night.  He asked me a few questions I was not comfortable answering so I thought I'd ask them here.

What ammo does this rifle use?  Are 45-90 winchester, government, and sharps all based on the same case?

What power level can this rifle use?  I thought it would be among the strongest actions going, but I don't really know--seems like it ought to be in the same class as a Ruger #1, but I just don't know.

Can 45-70 gov't.ammo be used in this rifle?

Thanks in advance for your replies!

Mike,

That rifle comes in some magnum calibers, so it's a plenty strong action.

As far as I know, the .45-90 is just a longer version of the .45-70, my smith told me I could shoot .45-70 safely in my .45-120 barrel if I wanted to, but to expect to do a good chamber cleaning before I shot .45-120 in it afterwards, so I would think .45-70 in the .45-90 would be safe, also.

Here's load data for the .45-90, compliments of Jon..

45-90 brass is available at Cabelas and Midway.

Thank-you, Tim.  I will pass this info on to my lucky friend.
