Would .45 Colt to .454 be safe?
« on: March 23, 2006, 04:28:58 PM »
I really want a .454 but NEF doesn't make it. I don't know why don't don't. I've asked soooooooo many times. On Target Tec says that they can do it and they think the frame can handle it. They'll take the .45 colt and make it .454.

What do you think? Its 100.00 to do it. I don't want my gun to explode !

The receivers will handle it since they handle 64K psi .270win cartridges.  Thrust should be fine too considering the recoil of the heavy 450marlin, 45-70 and 500S&W are fired in it..

The barrel though might be a problem..  I'm not sure to the grade of steel and pressure ratings of it for the .45LC/410 samples.

You would have to be damned sure to remove the choke before firing too..  ..and that you had a SB2 receiver.

I personally wouldn't try it until I had all the math figures for the cartridge, receiver and barrel to compare against each other.  ....then itd first 20-40 shots would be in a gun vice with me pulling on a string while hiding behind a tree to fire it.

For one thing, the only barrel that NEF makes in 45 colt is also a .410 chamber, so it certainly wouldn't be ideal with the long throat and excessive bullet jump. The other issue is the SB1 frame on the 45C/.410, you would need an SB2 frame to shoot the .454 Casull with it's pressure being at 50kcup, right up there with the .500S&W.

Personally, I see no benefit in the .454 Casull in a rifle, the .500 S&W, .45-70 and .450 Marlin are already production firearms and available as accessory barrels. Another choice would be to have a 44mag barrel reamed to 445 Supermag if you want to stick with the little bullets. :P

We forgot to mention that the 45C/.410 barrel only has a front bead and isn't drilled and tapped for sights, another added cost to fix. The other calibers I mentioned all come with sights and are D&Td cept the .450M.

Funny! My 450 Marlin Ultra Hunter was drilled and tapped just as all other Handi rifle barrels.

Does it have sights too? The current accessory barrel doesn't have sights, comes with a scope rail!
