Ruger No.1 22-250 or Winchester Model 1885 High Wall 22-250
« on: March 24, 2006, 07:58:42 AM »
Hi:

A few questions between these 2 rifles:

1. Which is built better?

2. Where is the Winchester Model 1885 High Wall rifle made?

3. Which is More accurate?

4. Better Walnut stock : Ruger or Winchester?

Thanks,
coyote trapper1928

WOW,
coyote trapper1928,
Those questions may be hard to answer, but I'll give it a try.

1-I own a lot of # 1's in different caliber's but have only owned one Win. 1885 and it happened to be in 22-250. I would have to say that overall the  # 1 is the better gun.

2-I'm not sure were there made now, or even if there still made, from what I've heard Winchester is on the way to closing there doors and cant seen to find anyone to buy the company.  I have heard that S&W looked at them and made the comment that there was nothing worthwhile buying. Anyway the one I had was made in Japan, so your really not buying a US made product.

3-That's a tricky question as every gun is different and you can get a good one or a bad one, all I can say is that the Winchester I had was ok for WoodChucks and bigger game, all of the #1's I've had that were under 30 caliber would be good for shooing small Chipmunks at 100 + Yds.

4-Stocks or Wood is something that's impossible to say. The wood on my Winchester was ok but I've seen nicer ones. The same for the # 1's, I've had nice ones and some that look like Custom Wood, you really have to look at each and every one of them.

Depending on what you want, the Ruger is available with a heavy barrel that Browning does not offer.
I have a Browning 78 and a 1885 Both are nice guns.
I also have a Ruger 1V in 22-250 which convinced me to buy another in 220 Swift

Whichever you choose GOOD CHOICE

My vote would go to the Ruger #1. I think they're both well built guns, and pretty close accuracy wise, but the Rugers seem to be a little better wood in general, and fit and finish is a bit better.
Ballard, the great American Rifles!
