I just got a new reloading manual in. They list 3 load levels, Trapdoor, Marlin 1895, and Ruger #1. I know the handi and handle the 40,000psi Marlin loads. Can it handle the 50,000psi Ruger loads???

Hey there, the Handi's probably can handle the 50k but the factory says stick with the Marlin data at 40k. Have fun and get some lead in the stock! I use 59 grains of H4198 and it shoots real nice! This data came from the 2005 Hodgdon manual and is the same in the 2006. Happy shooting!

My book lists 55gr start and 60gr max of H4198 which is what I was thinking of trying. I currently use 50gr of R7, which is very accurate, but I want more speed. How is the recoil with your load Matt.

Hey Lefty, I think these guys are using lead bird shot to fill the hole in the stock. I had a mercury recoil suppressor in mine but removed it beacuse accuracy took a crap with it in. Now that I'm gonna try a new powder I'll probably reinstall it and work up a load.

Lead shot works, but I like a pipe filled with lead, it's easy to remove and install. :wink:

I have used lead 12ga slugs and bird shot as well..but for ease of use..#6 shot works pretty good all by it's self..just put a little foam in the butt stock screw hole and tamp it down after filling..

I use the synthetic monte carlo stock which is hollow. I put a clean gym sock in it, poured some lead shot in the sock, duct taped the sock shut and trimmed it off. Easy and removable! Takes the kick out of the load and turns it into a big push.

I called H&R a couple years ago to ask about the pressure level on their Classic. They really danced around and didn't want to answer, stating that they didn't want people shooting reloads in their guns and saying the same stuff we always hear about it voiding their warranties. Finally, they said it was okay to shoot loads up to, but not over, the level of the Marlins.

When you consider the Handi SB2 comes in .500 S&W which is loaded to over 50,000psi with comparable case head thrust, you'll reconsider their recommended 45-70 max load level. But most folks consider the recoil intolerable from the mid levergun levels up.
