Encore 375 JDJ vs S&W 460
« on: March 16, 2006, 02:24:41 AM »
I'm wanting a big bore hunting barrel for hunting pigs here in Texas with my Encore. I shot a Contender carbine this past weekend with a 450 Marlin barrel with little problems, but I think it may be a bit much for a handgun barrel.

I'm considering either the 460 S&W or the 375JDJ in a 11" barrel with a muzzle tamer installed resulting in a finished length of about 12".

One thing I was wondering is if I will get complete powder burn on the JDJ with such a short barrel. All of the standard offering I find are either 14" or 15" barrels.

Any opinions on this would be appreciated.

I prefer the 460 in an Encore with the 15" barrel for 100+ shots. And I can also shoot 454 Casull's and 45 Long Colts in that barrel. With a shorter barrel I would go for the 44 Mag.

While I would prefer the JDJ for many things, I prefer the larger bullet for the pigs. I also prefer bullets that will cut a semi-wadcutter style hole on entry. I don't know if the pointed 460 bullets will do that. The reason is to get a better blood trail.  With the right bullet I think the 460 will be the best hog cartridge for handgunners yet.

Questor, I don't us a lot of them pointed bullets either. I like them flat nose bullets.  :D

Personally, I like the 375 jdj.  I have it in the SSK 12" with muzzlebrake. I'm using 220 gr Hornady XTP FP's.  If you want the 11" Encore barrel you can get it custom from Fox Ridge Outfitters.  The 220's should be more that enough for pigs.
