94 Timber carbine
« on: March 22, 2006, 04:53:32 AM »
I have an opportunity to buy a Winchester 94 Timber Carbine in the 444 marlin for a little over 300 dollars. I would rate it 99%, it has a small rust mark on the rear sight that I think will come off and the barrel has a slight mark where it sits in the gun shops rack. I don't need the rifle but I see they are now going for around 700-800 used and over a 1000 new. I am more a marlin fan and had planned on buying a Marlin 444 but the price seems right on this one. What do you guys think?

JDenis:  Get it before it goes away.  That Winchester is every bit as good as it's Marlin counterpart.  Those blemishes just add character to the piece.  The Winchester is a strong action - none of my three 444s have ever had any problems at all.

These babies shoot easy, the porting helps control recoil but wear earplugs or better.  I think mine carries a 1:12 twist and she shoots to 2" at 100 yds with open sights and 330 gn hardcast loads and Beartooth loading data.  I haven't scoped it yet but maybe for my next Elk hunt.

If yours hits low at 100 yds, call Browing/Winchester somewhere in Missouri and get a couple of shorter different front sight blades.  If they recommend one particular height get the next lower one.

The 444 is best maximized through reloading and firelapping the barrel is fun, will help you get to know your rifle and will help improve accuracy with heavyweight cast slugs.  If you want to have a hoot sometime, go shooting around dusk and have someone film the muzzle blast from that carbine.  Yeeha!  HTH.  Mikey.

I just got a 444 timber still in the box off a collector for $650 w/ a set of dies. I haven't got out to shot it yet. I mostly shot with open sights when I'm in the woods or swamps. I bought a 1x4x22mm leupold for $190 for on it in case I want to scope it.Its there shotgun/muzzleloader scope I wasn't going to pay an extra $89 for the word rifle on the box.I'm waiting for hornady's new pointed rounds to get in so I can sight it in.I'll let you guys know how it shots. Later :-)

dave - that little honey is too nice not to shoot.  Get yourself on over to the Beartooth Bullets site for some awesome reloading info and some excellent insights on the 444.  You will be happy with that Timber Carbine, especially when you launch some of those heavyweights that are available for it.

Yes, the new ammo for the lever guns is good but the 444 can give you a lot more.  JMHO.  Mikey.

Well I didn't have all the money to pick it up this time but I put some down on it. I think it was a good deal, even my Father said the gun is exceptionally clean. I just have to scrape up the rest of the money and I will let you know how it shoots. It will be shot a lot thats for sure. Thanks for the input.
