what o/u???
« on: March 13, 2006, 05:09:24 PM »
I am wanting to get an o/u in 12 gauge but have no experiance with them so I thought I would ask the pros. I dont want any thing fancy. It will be for hunting any thing from chucker to water foul. So I need something that can take somewhat of a beating. Im looking at spending around $700. I looked at one at a gun show the other day and it had a little swich buy the triger what is this for? My last ? is I understand the whole double triger set up but how do the o/u that have one triger work? Do you pull once and it fires one barrle then pull agin and it fires the next? Thanks for your time and help.

I "heard" CZ make good over-unders, for about $750..... other than those CZs, you have Spartans (about $450) and people don't seem to like them much...............

I'm thinking $700 might get you a used gun.......I've seen a few Brownings used for around that but for the most part I think you'll have to spend a little more to get a nice one.  I'm thinking that $1100 or more is more realistic for a new quality built O/U shotgun....It's been about 5 years sense I've seriously shopped but I have looked at a few from time to time and prices don't seem to have dropped.

I have rabbit hunted for many years over dogs and currently carry a Beretta 686 whitewing in 20 guage.  It's a very light gun.

I hope you look around and find a buy on something in your price range that you can be happy with.

Not many new ones in your price range. As stated you might find a used Browning Citori at that price or a Ruger Red Label or for that matter any one of several decent guns.

You might also see if you can locate one of the new Mossberg brand O/Us. I have no clue who makes them but I've seen them and they look like an amazing bargain for the price and yes it's well inside your range.

The CZ Huglu guns are nice but you're not gonna find one new for your price point I don't think.

Not sure what little switch your talking about. Some gun's have a safty there, may be a selector lever. Most of the O/U's I've used have a tang safty with a selector lever built into it. The selector lever will allow you to choose which barrel you want to fire first. Sliding that lever forward takes off the safty and to one side or the other, which barrel will fire.

On my AyA's, SxS's, the little switch in the trigger guard is the selector lever. The safty is on the tang. I've a Browning O/U that has the selector lever/safty on the tang. I've never really gotton the hand of that set up. Mayby because I use SxS's most. The fastest and most reliable selector for me was doubble trigger's. When I was training dog's, I used a Charles Daly 12 ga SxS with double triggers and never wondered which barrel I was using. I wish my AyA's and my Browning had double triggers.

Probally hard to find but Ithica used to sell O/U's. I belivev they were called the model 300. They were made by Marouka (bad spelling) of Japan and were real nice gun's and cheap. They had a single non-selective trigger. You might find one of them around. Perhaps an old Marlin or a Pederson also. Pederson was made by Mossberg in their custom shop and were nice guns. I gunned for a guy at a firld trial years ago and used his. Liked it for on O/U.

Why do you want an O/U?

Not sure what PhelpsJ's reasons are but one thing about having 2 barrels is you can have different chokes in each tube.  O/U's are simple in design, take apart to clean easily and are very reliable.  They balance and point well and can be made very light.

I don't know about the two choke deal, not sure it ever really made a difference to me. But nothing handles like a double, O/U or SxS. And the O/U is a close second. :D

For the price of a used Browning Citori or a used Beretta I would highly recommend looking at a Weatherby Orion Upland.  They can be bought for around $999 around here and they are quality guns built by SKB in Japan.  If you can find a used one, you can save a couple of hundred.

I own a Traditions by Fausti that I bought new on cearance from Wally world for $350. I've seen them sell at Gander mountain for around $500-600 depending on the model. Mine has the silver receiver, decent wood, tasteful engraving, tang safety, and the barrel selector in front of the trigger. Fausti is now making Weatherby's shotguns and all the guns that I've seen come out of there plant have been pretty nice guns.

i bought a cz ringneck a while back.  i like it,  but i also bought a ithaca skb made 20 gauge since then,  and i love that gun.   take a serious look at used ithacas.    that is my advice.
