I have never heard of patriots day before a recent news report. It must be a regional thing.

Celebrating Patriots Day is pretty much a northeast thing, although it should get more notice.  But it's not a good thing to remind people of in this day of socialist ascendance.

I live in Western Massachusetts, and from what I know it is only an Eastern Massachusetts thing. They have the Boston Marathon race, and the bars lining the course are packed by 8 AM.

No vacation day for me :-(

Years ago I was stationed at Ft Devens, MA and particated twice in the re-enactment of the march of Capt Davis and his two sons from their home in Acton to the bridge between Lexington and Concord, and later a third time in 1975 (200th anniversary).

The first were my motivation to build my first mortar.  On the third I fired it for the first time, April 19th 1975 on a range in Fort Devens.

Capt Davis and his sons were killed in the conflict.  Of note is that he was CHOSEN to lead by his men - against the tyrany of the British.  They went into battle for what they believed in - although they didn't have more than farm implements with which to fight.  Also of note, Capt Davis was black.
