worn out dies??
« on: March 24, 2006, 11:42:12 AM »
Just paid $3.00 for some old rcbs dies in .243. Figured I could use them for parts at the least. Tried them out on some old brass and discovered the bullets will slide in the brass with a push of my fingers. I guess these are worn out. How many rounds must you load to "wear them out". ??? TVC15

Perhaps not.  Take the resizer ball off of the depriming stem and run a case thru.  See what it measures acrost the mouth of the case -- or measure the inside diameter of the mouth if you have that sort of calipers.  It could be that you need to buff off a couple of thousandths from the resizer ball.  Just put the ball back on the stem, chuck it into a drill motor and use very fine emery cloth or 0000# steel wool to shine it up real well.
To cover all your bases, you might want to mike those bullets you're using.
I find it hard to imagine someone putting enough brass cases into a steel resizer to wear it out.

If they're RCBS dies, I'd send it back to RCBS and have RCBS check them out.  They come with a lifetime warranty that as far as I know, includes any and all owners.

I measured the ball it was .241, which I believe is about right. However the bullets measure .2425 at best. This was old range brass so I crimped them slightly out of round and ran them through the expander ball only. Now they are working well. The ones that are not perfect for the 85 grain fit very good  for some 100 grain that measure out a true .243. thanks for the advice. Looks like I might have got a deal.   TVC15

Hardly be a good test of die wear .........using "old range brass" to determine die condition. Doubtful you have worn out dies....
