Getting ready for calling.
« on: September 26, 2006, 08:03:56 AM »

Went to the range to test fire my 223wssm, Had been working on some loads for Coyotes and think i have hit the nail on the head, Five rounds in half inch, Guess i finally got it right, Last year i could not git it together.

The wife and I took a little trip out to one of the ranches we call on and found quite a bit of sign plus saw a good supply of jack rabbits and a few cotton tails so all in all it looks pretty good. The ranches in this area still have a few small calves. I did see some activity of group hunting which is good for bringing in multiple coyotes. Now if the wind don't blow He!! off the cross it should be a good year for coyote calling..............Joe.................

I am glad to hear that you got that .223 Wssm in particular lined out. I knew that if anyone could do it, it would be you.
I really did want to start this season with a new rifle and am just about sold on trying a .22 Hornet. It is not to be as I spent the whole summer shooting those S/A .45’s and working up new loads for them and will use my old reliable RugerM77.

It is still early here to think about calling although the harvest has begun. I will hear a few reports of the coyotes pacing the Combines at night. They will stay at the outer fringes of the lights keeping even with it so they must have learned that this big machine makes for a great hunting dog!

Once the crops are out I will want to go badly but will wait for the fur to prime up. This will be around mid Nov when the Red\Gray fox season opens. When this happens all three species can be hunted around the clock till late Jan then it is back to Coyotes only from sunrise to sunset. I will continue to hunt the yotes hard till late Feb.

One advantage to this “wait” is that our first Deer season happens before the Fox season starts. Therefore, I will not be spooking the Deer too much via foot traffic through these areas. It is a good trade off as I will be glad to get venison in the freezer and the Biologist people tell me that the yotes will always be here barring the event of an atomic blast.
At any rate, I will be more than ready to go!

Glanceblamm.

The idea of using the 22 hornet is a good one. If you have dense cover the hornet will work great. I plan to use mine on a couple ranches due to dense cover. The little Ruger hornet gets the job done 3/4" at a hundred is all i need.  One of the ranchers called me today saying he has a problem with young calves being taken by coyotes so its off to take care of business tomorrow. This job will require the winchester 223wssm and the wifes 6.5 JDJ due to some long range shots, She is deadly with that silly thing and she can see better than i do. Take care Glanceblamm.......Joe....Oso.......
