mauser rebarrel
« on: March 20, 2006, 03:37:15 PM »
bought a nice k98 mauser at a show near me this weekend. i gotit for $170 after shopping at different booths to find the one with the combination of the right stock with the best finish and still having a tight action, etc.

it's in 8mm Mauser. i have no use for this. i bought the gun to sporterize as a project. so i have settled on .22-250 as the caliber i want, or possibly 6.5x55 swedish, depending on cost.

what's it going to cost to have someone twist a new barrel onto this thing?

sounds inexpensive but i know better.  :)

i found barrels on numrich's wensite for $120. i have dealt with them before and it was great so i will buy from them again.

how much is the installation and headspace check? and can i expect 1/2" groups from it, like my other rifles after finding "their" loads, or are Mausers not as accurate on average? (assuming i get a decent barrel)

I would test the feeding of the 22-250 .... if it won't feed in yer 8mm bbl , it won't feed any bbl either. 6,5X55 would be a cinch if ya have a turk small ring. I would question tearing apart a "pretty" milsurp for a project, when the prices are on the rise. I prefer shot out /no wood cripples for projects. Cheaper and heck everything gets "massaged" , or replaced anyway. Good luck w/ it, but don't expect to save money over buying a rifle ready to shoot. On the other hand the satisfaction can be immense.  $0.02   MV

this one is already in various stages of remake. however i do plan on buying a k-98 to keep in as-issued shape, for history's sake.

this one was meant to be a project for myself and my grandfather, who loves this sort of thing.

a keepsake and something i can take hunting with me as well.

this one wasn't "pretty" but i picked one that was functional and that the wood would look nice when refinished. the numbers don't match or anything, so it won't be a collector's piece.

i already love how it is shaping up and i can now see why people love the mauser so much.

It's the enginering that make the mauser some fantastic. It is probably one of the best engineered bolt guns in the world!! The metalurgy was top of the line (at least before the war took it's toll) at the time.. We have much better understanding of metalurgy today but the design has not been bettered..

so, about the cost....

can you give me a decent idea? it needs the safety moved, and drilled and tapped and a barrel installed.

how about a bluing? i have two barrels in mind for the 6.5x55 and one is blued and one is not. there is a $30 difference. is it worth it onw way or another?

the barrels are adams and bennett, btw.

i bought an adams and bennett 21" sporter barrel in the white. it needs headspaced, finished reaming, and blued.

not a bad deal, came to $100 total including shipping from midwayusa.

wish me luck :)

Gunsmith in Oregon named Mark Skaggs will install, chamber, crown and test fire a Mauser rebarrel for about $150.  This price includes a  Adams & Bennett barrel in the white, caliber of your choice that will fit bolt and magazine without additional work.  You pay Shipping charges both ways. My shipping from Texas cost about $38.  Any other work, tap for scope for example, is extra of course, but resonable in price.  His contact info is:  www.skaggsgunsmithing.com       or     casesc45@aol.com

Used him a few months ago to rebarrel an 1891 mauser to 257 roberts.  Found him pleasant to deal with over phone and took between 2 to 3 weeks to get my rifle back.

I used Mr. Skaggs for my Turk sporter (also in .257 Roberts :)) and he did excellent work.  That $150 job starts out from a barrel blank that he actually threads for the action.

Turk Mausers (though large-ring actions) are threaded for small-ring Mauser barrels, so the choices for pre-threaded barrels from Adams & Bennet are limited to 3 or 4 low pressure rounds and only the 21" thin-contoured barrels.  By using Mr Skaggs I was able to get my barrel in a #3 contour 24" configuration.  He even touched up the Dremel jobs I'd done for the bent bolt notch on the receiver and the thinning of the trigger-guard.  It's really a good deal and he's wonderful to work with.

Other option (a bit more chamberings available) is ER Shaw.  They chamber barrels in just about anything out there and to almost any action.  Barrels are $135 and they'll fit and test fire for $60 more.  An advantage here is that they offer blueing services for an additional $80, which is great.  I've not been very impressed with any of the spray-on finishes, so this is something I'll go with on my next project.
