7400 ?

:cb2: Ever since I was old enough to thumb my way through a Sears and Roebuck catalog I wanted a Remington 740/7400. My gunsmith doesn't like them and has advised me not to get one. Now, I really don't have any details from him, just his opinion. You guys who either have or have had this rifle, I would like to know what you think about them, good or bad. Also, can you get one today with a wooden stock, or are we stuck with synthetic only?

the 7400 wood model has been replaced with the 750 woodsmaster just checkout the website www.remington.com and i never owned one but two guys in my club own the older 742 models and they just love them. I myself will probibly buy the new 750 in 35 Whelen.

uncle of mine has one in 30-06 (7400) loves it..  Accurate as heck.  Not sure what your gun man was thinking. Buddy of mine tried to tell me my 760 in 270 wouldn't be that accurate, because you need a bolt to be accurate. RIGHT! but what do you expect from a guy who would rather hunt deer with a m-14 over a 7400.    yes the 7600 is now only avail. in tupperware, but the new woodmaster is out, very nice gun!  But if you want the 7400 in walnut there are still many available in stores.  Last week at a gun store saw 3 of them for 499! Also I am sure many distributers have them in stock as well ( them as in 7400 in a walnut gloss or satin)

:cb2: Thanks tanoose for the quick link to the Remington site. The 750 looks pretty good. I just wonder how much it's gonna cost. I called my local Wally-World, kinda hoping they might have a sale going on, but they are not getting rid of their gun. The girl I talked to didn't know what I was talking about. Anyway, they have they synthetic 7400 for $399 (regular price). I'm sure the new 750 is gonna be a bit more.

Now this is what's got me really confused.

The SPR22. What is it? Their copy reads:

I can't tell if it's a single shot, or a side-by-side. And the side view picture doesn't help someone as dumb as a rock like I am.

It looks kind of . . . interesting, but . . . what is it?

The spr22 is a double rifle.. Choices are 45-70 & 3006.  Yet I do not think they have hit the warehouses for some reason and no one seems to be able to get their hands on one either.

My guess on the 750 would be around $500-550 at walmart and gander mountain Someone mentioned on another post that they had seen them for $589. If you have a gander mountain store near you check them out the ones hear  in NY will match any price and sometimes they will even double the difference , it depends on who you talk to

I really like my 7400 in 30-06. I bought it used for $275 , apoun getting it home I gave it a COMPLETE stripping down and cleaning. So far it has yet to jam or fail to feed.
 Accuracy wize it's no target rifle but if I let the barrel cool completely between shots 2" groups are not hard to come by.
 But  my favorite thing about the rifle is how it handles and points, I cannot put my finger on why but rhe rifle just feels "right" in my hands.

I have an old model carbine in 30-06. I have hunted with it for over 15 years. By the way I have over 15 deer rifles and I tend to take one or two or more extra rifles every year. You never know when you might need an extra gun!! I have never shot a deer with any other rifle than the Remington and always jump shoot the deer, never yet got one in a deer stand! I just can't sit still long enough. I use open sights most shots are under 50 yards. I have never had a jam with four round in the clip. Do not try and put 4 rounds in the clip and one in the chamber because then the rifle will not feed the next round.  Finally, three of my hunting partners now have 7400's all wood stocks all bought used. 30-06, 270 and finally a 308 model. They all like them. The 308 was just had at a gun shop in central Kansas for 300 dollars and was in excellent shape. I don't think most people shoot enough rounds through them to wear them out!. If it was me, I would look for a used 7400 with a wood stock since that's what you want.

Bought a second hand 3006 742 in the early 70's and collected many deer. It never failed and was a joy for hunting the hills and woods. It devoured my handloads and had 1 inch accuracy at 100yds. Gave it to a relative who loves it and I picked up a second hand 7400 that shoots as well as the 742. For forest deer, I think the Rem autoloaders are fine tools.

My dad hunted with a 742 in .30-06 until recently (he got a Ruger M77 Mk2 in .270 to replace it).  It was accurate, and he killed a lot of deer, but it had a really bad habit of the case getting stuck in the chamber and then ripping the head off, causing a jam.  A friend of mine at work also has one of these and it has the same problem.
