Author Topic: cleaning help with an old knight lk93 (very rusty barrel) (Read 1182 times)

i have just been given a knight lk 93 legend that has alot of rust in the barrell what is the best way of cleaning this barrell ? i also want to add that the gun shoots great even with the rusty, neglected barrell..
this gun shot an inch high and dead center with 85grs. of pyrodex and a 240 hornady sabot..
i believe the gun was made in 1986, as 86 is the first 2 digets in the serial # ..i have stripped all the old paint off of the wood and oiled and steel wooled the barrel (outside ) back to very,very good condition. and going to redo the stock as well.
as far as the bore it looks to still have very nice rifeling but it is to rusty to see if and how much pitting is there..but like i said it is a real shooter even in this condition, but i would really like to get it back as good as possible....thanks...jeff

This is what I would do
1) get an old 50 caliber brus and soak brush the barrel quite a lot to remove loose and flaking rust.
2) get some bearchwood casey rust remover and use it as directed to get as much rust as you can
3) then I would use some of the rust and lead remover cloth put around the cleaning jig and run it up and down untill no rust is in the bore.

you will be working on this barrel for several days

Be careful with the rust remover as it will either remove the blueing or at least change the color. After getting all the bad stuff out I would finish up with about 100 passes with a patch over a brass brush coated with JB bore paste and that should polish up what is left.

This is what I would do: trade it in and buy a T/C.

i have been scrubbing with t/c #13 bore cleaner for a couple of days now with a patch over nylon brush and it is looking better now after about a 100 passes..

no need to trade for the t/c i already have the encore with the 209x50.. :wink:

you will need something stronger then #13 bore cleaner

I've used KROIL with great success. I swab the barrel with it and let it soak for a couple of hours, then run the brush through it for a while. I then run patches until they're coming out clean.

By the way, I just acquired an LK-93 myself. What a sweet handling little ML. Shoots great, too :grin: .

i wish that i would have had away to post pics of this gun before i started cleaning her up, after several days of scrubbing i have the barrel as clean as the day she was born, i know i could have done it alot quicker if i would have used some of the products that you guy's had told me about,just didnt have them here and i live way back in the sticks ( no store's around)...
now i have the stock all sanded down trying to decide what to do with it, but i can tell you one thing its gonna be different :wink:

this gun is just to good of a shooter not to have the t.l.c she deserves...

I would use up that t/c #13 cleaner and never buy anymore! Depending on what type of powder you use as to what cleans it up best. From yer last post its gotten fairly clean, good. Hoppe's Elite bore gel is some great stuff to clean bores with. So is very hot soapy water! A 50 cal. brush bronze wire will do but the 52 and 54 are better in the 50's bore size. Specially if you use sabots. You can bank on this, wd40 is about the best rust prevention lube you can buy. When you clean yer ML's use it freely its not that costly. If yer going to shoot alot from week to week get some t/c bore butter and use in bore. Fine steel wool will take off outside rust and not scar the metal.
