Saw one of the 96/44's (?) recently and it looked pretty good. Reminded me of a Winchester 88 (?) or something like that, can't remember the model #. Handled nice but couldn't shoot it. Anyone have any experience with these? Seems like a pretty slick rifle for deer and pigs.
Will they handle heavier bullets up to maybe 300 gr.?

My uncle has one. His actually is a pretty nice rifle, and shoots very accurately with a wide range of loads. I'm sure it'd handle any reasonably stout load too, but for deer, the 240g loads are plenty in just about any configuration.

It's a nice, accurate, easy carrying rifle, and he's crazy about his. Personally, if it's a lever action, I want a more traditional feel(Marlin), so I don't care much for the feel of it.

I had one, it's a piece of junk. Must have tried twenty loads, different powder and bullets. Only one that was half decent was Sierra 180 HP and stiff load of 4227.

Biggest thing I don't like about them is the rotary magazine that only holds three rounds, versus the 9 or 10 that Marlin holds.

Ruger lever is real ugly, try Marlin , Winchester, Puma, EMF. I have Marlin but have heard lots of good stuff about Puma, EMF.

Ever been in the brush with a 350+ feral hog whose having a bad day? Visibility is ohhhhhhhhhhh. THREE FEET! Even Annie Oakley might need more than three. I ain't sellin rifles but, I bought a Navy Arms Model 92 several years ago with a 24" octogon barrel in 357mag. Good walnut and slicked up real nice. Don't know about 44mag but, don't they make it in 45 long Colt. I think they do and if so it will do anything out of a rifle a 44mag will. By the way, after I slicked up the action I carry it more than a 1957 Model 94 that was bought new almost 50 years ago. I think it's probably as good a rifle. It just ain't a real Winchester.

It is THE ony Ruger firearm that I would not even consider buying. The magazine holds few rounds, it is homely, and I have never shot one that was as accurate as a comparable Marlin or Winchester. To each, his own, but just my 2 cents.

I have several ruger firearms, and like every one of them. Ruger was the one who brought back the single action revolver after Colt thought it was dead. Not only was it revived but, other than nostalgia, the Rugers are better than the Colts. Maybe someone at Ruger will now show Winchester how to make a model 94. It probably won't happen, since Bill is gone, but we can all hope.
