Did you ever not buy a gun and wish you had?
« on: March 11, 2006, 01:08:10 AM »
I didn't  buy a M-94 Swedish Mauser back in 1980 for $125.00!

It was at a pawn shop just outside the Ellsworth Air Force Base gate in South Dakota!
I wish there were pawn shops around here!

I still kick my butt everytime I think about not buying that gun!
Been looking for a good deal on one every since!

Yep at one time the Calico 22's with those weird 100 round magazines could be had fairly cheap no more then most other new 22 rifles now the used ones on the market are sky high. I wish I would have bought one when they were cheap just to have one.

Another time was at a rummage sale the guy had a Sealed Eight 22 revolver with the origional box that was like new for 80 bucks. I really did not have the money at the time so I passed. I should have called my banker and asked him to loan me the money for a week or two.  :(

Got rid of my two mosins but As far as milsurps go the local gun shop had a Mosin Nagant that they wanted 60 bucks for it and it was marked a Finn  capture 91/30 well I thought no big deal and I passed but let my gunsmith buddy know about it and he bought it. I should have bought it but my mother was on her death bed and I felt I should not spend any money at the time. Well the gun turned out not to be a 91/30 but a model 28. :(   If I would have known that same thing I would have borrowed the money for it and that one I would have kept.
Said I never had much use for one, never said I didn't know how to use it.

Yes but i'd rather not talk about it......I have passed on quite a few great buys in the past few years. Now i go by my gut feeling and trust it now 100% its always been right even though my mind will hesitate my gut feeling has always been correct.

BTW;  "I will never second guess my gut feeling again I promise".

Ok i'll talk i missed  finnish M28 two ski troop mosins$70,  a husqvarna m38 $200, a '91 ARG carbine $180, a P17 & P14 $200 each and all were very affordable in great condition too and yes i paid the price ever since then. I missed two $300each broomhandles and there gone too.  They just didn't seem important to me at the time, i wasn't into handguns until recently. I hope the C&R GODS will forgive me for i have sinned.

Oh i forgot i missed a M27 finnish mosin with the right scope mount & scope on it too for $199.

There were the Fins.

About 10 years ago we had a regular dealer at the local gun show who had 2 tables of Finish Mosin Nagants.  I had previously owned a Russian 91/30 in the 1970's and knew these guns could shoot, I also had read about the Winter War with Russia and that these Finish Mosins were tricked out to shoot well.

I did not want another Mosin at the time but I kept an eye on his table all those years and nobody wanted one.  He had a hard time selling them off and admitted that one of them remained in his roster for 2 years before getting rid of it.  His prices were quite low on them too.  I should have bought at least 3, kept the best and sold off the others!

I also passed on the French MAS 36's.  Now look at what they are going for if you can even find one.

Your right ChrisD. I remember seeing about just 5 years tables full of '41 Johnsons marked $1,200, next to a table full of 98k snipers/G43's all marked $1,000 and some had sniper scopes on them and just 2 years ago there was a table full of Jap rifles 7.7mm's all marked $50 and they looked excellent too.  Like you i just wasn't into these back then at that time i was looking for a SVT-40 Tokarev.

About 20 years ago there was a gun shop who had wall to wall C&R guns he had american '03's and Garands to every mauser and mosin you could think of too.  If i only had the interest and the cash back then.

Savage 99 in .358 Winchester on a used gun rack over 20 years ago.  I still look for one of those in good condition.

In the early 1990's a local Woolworth's located in, of all places, a local enclosed mall had racks of SMLE's, Garands, Mausers, M-1 Carbines, etc.  The most expensive were the Garands, going for $295.00.  The SMLE's were $70.00.

They were so plentiful, I figured they would be there forever.  Literally, in little more than a day they were gone and shortly after Woolworths closed.

A few weeks ago, a friend and I went by Petry's Ace Hardware in Lynchburg, Virgina.  If you are ever in Lynchburg, you owe it to yourself to go by.  He was drooling over a Chicom M-14 for around $550.  There were also two American made copies at well over $1,000.  Sorry I can't be more specific, but my own salivary glands were getting overworked by a Winchester 94 Timber Carbine in .444 Marlin.  We bot left empty-handed, me bacause I didn't have the money, and David, because he is tight.  I went back in a couple of weeks and my Winnie had gone from the open racks to the glass cases, because the announcement had come out about Winchester closing.  The price had gone up, but I swallowed hard and we went out the door together.  I asked the salesman about the M-14  and the guy standing next to David looking at the rack had known a good by when he saw one.  Me, I'm happy as a dog in a meat house, and David is still in mourning.

Oh yeah!  All those different Lugers, Mausers and 45s off the back pages of the gun magazines back in the mid-60s before the GCA of 68; and all the Enfields and 03A3s and Mausers too.  Yep, missed a bunch of them.  Mikey.

Back in 60's, paid $35 for 1891 Argentine(too much back then, but bought it from a hunting buddy to help him buy a new 243 Winchester); $45 for M47 Madsen 30-06(new); $35 for 43 Spanish  1879 Argentine Remington Rolling Block and about $50 for a new Marlin .22 model 99 M1. Would have bought a Ruger 10-22 but $10 more.  I just take a deep breath and sigh when I think about the 30 cal carbines, swedish mausers and so many others I passed on back then.

I only regret not buying guns on days that end in Y.

I never liked milsurps and just couldn't understand why you would want a crappy, beat-up gun when you could have a nice new rifle.

well, oops.

too bad i didn't buy 'em back then because now i love them and can't find the right ones.
