Its not a real hard hitting round, it shoots good out of my 3" bbl. I've never hunter in Texas, but it seems like if you are looking at factory loads, the 210 grain bullets would be a better choice for hunting. I've taken two nice sized NY deer with 210 grain xtp loads. One shot zipped through the neck of an 8 pointer, the other was a 140 lb doe. Shot her in the heart, and the bullet was found under the hide on the opposite shoulder.
My last deer taken was a large bodied yearling 7 pointer. This was a handloaded 215 grain hard cast semiwadcutter loaed to about 1100 fps out of a 657 Mt. Gun. Not a good shot or angle, but the bullet penetrated from the butt to the shoulder and kept going. Gotta love hard cast!
