There is a down side to our hunt this morning. The slate call that was made for me by a friend got broke, busted. :cry: I got a couple of mouth calls but have no faith in them yet(need more practice) and my only other call is my box call. You that use slate calls please tell me what you use and why. I need to get another slate call and I'm looking for HELP. Lawdog

I hate that. I know how it is to have a favorite and have something bad happen to it. My younger brother won't allow me to forget. Right now as far as friction calls go I carry a slate and a glass along with a box call. My slate call is a Primos classic that I've had for about ten years. The glass call is a Cody world class that I just rec'd as gift, so far I like it. I have a basic no frills box call made out of yellow poplar. I got it some time back at a banquet as a door prize. Most of my calls are several years old some are even out of production. When I find something that works I try to stay with it. I carry these calls and use them quite often but most often I find myself relying on a diaphragm call. I like to have the call in my mouth at all times. I feel like I can call without having to think about what sound I want to make. Good luck!!!

Hi Lawdog i am with Frog123 the CODY Calls r the way to go i have one in a slate and 1 in a glass i used to use MAD's calls But i pick u a Cody call and tryed it and that is what i carry now they r the Best one's made i have used them for about 4 seasons now u can make any sound a turkey can make u can make it on that call u can make the kee-kee run on it look up www.midwestturkeycall.com they have them and the guy that makes them as a tape out it is called SLATE & GLASS n' LONGBEARDS with Bill Zearing some people call him the Friction Master he shows u how to make all the sounds on the call the video is in with the calls i have been to 3 NWTF calling contest and alot of the friction callers use them i hope u get u one it is worth it hope i have help if u get one let me know if u like it good luck VM

VM,
what are the differences between the Cody glass calls? I see 3 on the website you posted from $27-$50. It seems of the first two one is higher pitched. I've got a HS slate over glass call but I've always called up more birds with a box call.

Hi Jack i have the calls in the model Cody 2 u can get a like a young hen sound to a old hen sounds and i have all the cody strickers they make ea of them makes a diff sound what is good about the call any where u put the striker u can make a sound there not like other calls u have only 3 or 4 places on the call to work on i dont know about the Cody woodman call But i will soon my birthday is in May and i told my wife that is what i wanted lol

i will tell u know when i get it i have call in a bunch of toms with a box's call too i use a old Lynch fool proof and a quaker boy Little one sider box call but i always break out the cody first if i am calling for some one i will u a slate box and a mouth call to sound like 2 hens and u can CUTT on a slate or glass call good i like the way it sounds and i have call in alot of birds that like it too VM

That's a coincidence, I have an old Lynch and a Quaker Boy too. I usually carry a mouth call just in case it rains or if I want to call loud. I do most of my calling with the Quaker Boy.

That's a good trick trying to sound like two hens. I never thought of that.

I think I'll pick up one of those Cody's. I know what you mean about most slate calls only having a couple "sweet spots".

Hi Jack on the Cody call u cant go wrong any where on the call u can use i use 2 calls at a time to sound like 2 hens i will yelp on my mouth call and right behinde it i will call with a slate or box and right after that i will move the leaves on the ground sounds like hens feeding i have had a bird working in and when he gets close i will stop calling and maybe work the leaves back and forth try that next time i carry 2 hen decoys and a jake when i am hunting around feilds i have them run acrross a hay feild in full strut to get to the decoys what a sight to see :grin: on the way to work today around 2:15 pm i seen a tom struting in a hay feild by himself good luck VM

I 'm no expert, in this field,but a few years ago I was experimenting with slate calls and came up with the ideal of using a clay pigeon inserted in a PVC end cap cut down to the height of the clay. I found by using the different ridges of the clay,I could get different pitches. I started with a ceder striker with a plastic spool from sewing thread wrapped with electrical tape,worked great! ,until it got wet. Then I tried the carbon striker , wet or dry no problem. I love my trusty Quaker Boy slate but one day I was caught in a terrential downpour. My slate was wet and my trusty box call was useless. After the downpoor we spotted 6 jakes across the field. All I had left was my mouthcalls. I always could use them but lacked confidence in them because the other calls sounded better. Well I got one birds attention and got all 6 coming in. However the newbie with me got excited and missed. Oh well. But I learned to have a little confidence in your calling and who knows what will happen. might have to check out Cody.

Hi Jack have u got to try the Cody call out every time i go out i can call all kinds of hens in but no gobblers i did call one good bird in and shot and missed my scope mount was lose now no more scope on my Benelli let me know how the call is working out and have u ever used a wing bone call i am learning it is hard talk to u later VM

I have to kick myself because after I bought it I put it in a bag with some new stuff I bought for opening day, headlamp, food, etc. because it arrived the day before and I was straightening out my vest.

Well, I load up my truck, I even had a list, and drive up to the mountains. About two hours from home I think "Gee, where's that bag?" and of course, it's at home laying on the bed.

This past weekend I was tied up so I didn't get out at all so unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to use it.

Hi Jack u sound like me bad luck But each time i go i call turkeys in BUT they havent had any beards i call in 1 good bird and miss it and a truck load of hens the hens like it when u purr and cuck on that cody call good luck VM
