Help me w/.45-70
« on: May 04, 2006, 06:54:39 AM »
Mornin folks. Trying to work up loads for .45-70 w/ IMR 3031 and 405 Gr JSP. All my info says Col should be max 2.550" When seating to cannelure COL. is at 2.680" If seated to 2.550 they'll be way past the cannelure. What should I do??

What rifle are you shooting these loads in?  I found 2.550" is a pretty good idea on the Guide Gun.  Longer OAL results in the bullet sticking in the rifling and "pulling" if you decide to not shoot it.  My # 1 can take a longer OAL.  Much depends on the barrel leade and nose shape.  If you're longer bullet feeds and doesn't engage the rifling I see no problem, assuming proper load data.

Is there a "need" to seat them to 2.550" If your rifle is a single shot then there isn't a need for that short a COL if the 2.680" COL will chamber. If you have a lever gun then load up a dummy round at 2.680" and see if the function through the action. If you need the 2.550" COL then you will have to trim the cases or crimp into the bullet using a Lee Factory crimp die. Also make sure your cases do not exceed the max length for your rifles chamber.

Use a Lee Factory Crimp Die.  The guys shooting Marlins do this all the time - only way to make them cycle reliably.

If the 405 grain bullet happens to be made by Remington, you
can seat the bullet down to the point where you can roll crimp the case
mouth over the small "shoulder" up past the bullet's cannalure.
That's what I do for Marlin lever guns, and it works for me.
The Lee factory crimp die is another option, as previously mentioned.

Coyote Hunter said a mouthful.  IMHO if you use a Lee Factory Crimp Die you can crimp anywhere you wish.
