Back to BFR once again....
« on: May 15, 2006, 10:20:27 AM »
Like new, BFR in .475/.480 for $461.00....  Do you go for it or not???

This is what I am pondering now...  As the earlier discussion showed, since I have Ruger .45 Colts I really don't need anything bigger for deer/elk.  But that price, THAT price, makes it really tempting!!!

....should've never got a part-time job at a sporting goods store! :D

Go for it.  I have a 45/70 and am very happy with it.   And at that price I'll bet you will at worst brake even.

Check the serial number prefix, if it is "DM", this is the old model BFR, and is of significantly lower quality than the new model, which was introduced in early 2000.  (This might be the reason for the cheap price.) The new prefix is "J" (I think), and the guns are much higher quality.

That being said, my BFR is a "DM", and it is working perfectly after some tweaking.  Check the forcing cone for cracks, and check the barrel/cylinder gap, which should be very tight (around .002, if memory serves me correctly).  These were the main trouble spots for DM models.  The first will require replacement of the barrel, and the second usually requires replacement of the cylinder.  Magnum Research may honor a warranty claim, but I am not sure if you are not the original owner.

Other than those factors, it is a GREAT deal on a great gun.

 My apologies for not thoroughly reading the initial post.  If it is a 475/480, it is 99.9% that it is the new model, as I do not think they made that caliber in the DM guns.  Grab it today!

I am pumped!!!  The gun arrived in the store and couldn't believe my eyes...  I swear the thing is nib; even had to rub off the packing grease!  Only mark on the gun is a slight cylinder ring and it is complete with all the stuff from the factory including the warranty card.  And yes, it has the JT serial number.  This is the second "used" gun I ordered in for myself(other cz550fs in 6.5x55) and lucked out with what I would call new guns.  Now I have to wait for employee night so I can save the big $$$$.

Mr. Frosty,
I will be sure to let everyone know if she is good, bad or indifferent.  It will be awhile though; employee purchase night isn't for another 50 days or so.
