50 yard or 100 parallax for 22 mag?
« on: September 24, 2006, 10:38:42 AM »
i'm getting ready to scope my 22 mag for squirrel hunting. most rimfire scopes are set up at 50 yard parallax.  seeing how the 22 mag has a bit more reach, why not use a scope with a 100 yard parallax? i thinking a fixed 4X. thanks.

How many squirrels will you be shooting  at 100 yds?

For the most part it really won't matter........the error is small at those ranges and grows as the range increases.  A lot of fellows question the need for adjustable objectives for all but very long range shooting with high magnifacation scopes.......

Unless your shooting a custom built rimfire with high grade competition ammo the error will be less than the accuracy capability of the gun and/or ammo.......and in my case, the shooter.......

at rim fire ranges parallex is much to do about nothing.......IMO

I agree with Victorcharlie.  I have centerfire scopes on all my rimfires and they work great.  Another factor is how well the stock fits you.  If you get the same cheek weld each time you mount the gun, and have the gun sighted in properly.  the paralax difference is not a problem in my experience.

thanks. the reason i ask is, if i come across a nice rifle scope at the same cost or less than a rimfire one, i won't have to pass it by. the longest shot i ever took on grays was 72 wards. got lucky too!

On a 4x fixed scope you won't notice it nearly as much as you would on a 3-9x set on 9power.

FWIW, it is EXTREMELY simple to adjust parallax on most scopes yourself, you for $20-30 the company will do it for you.

If your scope has an external lock right on the objective bell, simply unscrew and remove it.
The very end of most scopes, beyond that silver ring on the bell is the lock ring. A rubber "strap" wrench is helpful on tight lock-rings.

You will notice the objective lense in most scopes is threaded into the objective bell, and can be turned out to bring the parallax in closer, and turned in to bring the parallax out further. DO NOT, however, turn the lense completely out and remove it--you will lose the nitrogen charge of the scope.

Sight in on the distance you want to be parallax free. Turn the objective until everything is set, Replace the lock right and tighten. You're done.

I've dont this on 4-5 scopes. I can bring a 100yd parallax scope to 50-60yds in less than 5 minutes.

I have a 4x32 Simmons rimfire scope, I think it is called 22 mag it came with rings I dont knowto what range the paralax is set. This scope is mounted on a Marlin 22 mag. I have shot just over 1000 rounds through it, no paralax problems, scope problems or any kinda problems. I really dont know anything about paralax except what I have read. I wouldnt worry about it on a fixed 4x scope.     Dune

I have a Simmons 22 Mag rimfire scope and use it for two purposes:
1) Hunting at relatively close ranges (10 to 50 yards)
2) Off-hand target shooting at 100 yards.

It's fine for both those purposes. One of the attractive features was its relatively low cost and the rimfire 3/8 rings that came with it. It's a pretty decent scope for the money.
