I figured somebody would have answered this by now....I usually stay out of these discussions because...it usually turns into a ******* match....Myself...I like Leupolds and that's what I usually recommend to my friends, I like them, have not had a failure and I think the VX-I is a good scope for the money...I have 3 older VX-IIs, which I have been told is the same glass as the current VX-I...I would guess that between me and my buddies we have at least a dozen VX-Is, VX-IIs and VX-IIIs... They are bright enough for legal shooting hours, and I'm old enough that my eyes are now the limiting factor anyway...Both my deer rifle scopes have been returned back to Leupold to have the Heavy Duplex Reticle put in them, I don't know if a Nikon can be returned back to the factory for this....The clicks or not make no difference to me, if I move a Leupold one minute of angle then it responds properly.....Once set, I don't have to mess with them...
That being said...I have a buddy that has started buying Nikons....he now owns a Buckmaster 4x12, I believe and 2-3x9 ProStaffs...I have shot all 3 of his rifles and they also respond well, are clear and I can tell you, his 15 year old boy killed a doe last year on one of our farms and it was dark...probably 10 minutes after legal to be honest with you...But, he dropped her right there...So they are also bright...If Nikon configures a scope like you want then I would bet you will enjoy using it...Good Luck
