Geez, I can't imagine having to buy smokeless powder online, the cost for hazmat is ridiculous for the quantities that most shooters use. It's available at so many local stores that I'd never consider it, same for primers. For those in small towns, that hazmat cost would make me drive to the big city, even at $3 a gallon for gas!!

Not hammerin' on ya Tim, I'm one of those living in a small town, it is a minimum 40 mile drive to a store that sells powder, the other two are 50 and 60 miles distant. It ain't cost efficient to pay 15 bucks for gas to arrive at a store that doesn't have what I want and won't order it because they are finding stocking powder and primers less and less profitable. I've had those conversations.

Even buying 20 pounds at a time, lots of money can be saved online, most powders I see these days in shops and gunshows are priced above $20.00 a pound, buying the same powder online in 8 pound jugs one can usually find it between 15 and 17 dollars a pound, add $1.50 a pound for shipping and hazmat and you still beat the going store price average of $22.00 a pound. Worst part of the store price is that the markup includes a markup on the shipping and hazmat. Last I priced 1000 Federal Large Pistol Magnum primers at a shop 40 miles from me, $27.00. I can beat that buying a sleave of 5000  any day of the week online. I can beat that simply adding a 1000 primers to a powder order.

True, most shooters don't shoot the amounts I do, but most reloaders shoot enough that what can be saved by ordering online can often be turned into anthing between 200 and 1000 extra rounds fired for the same money, and thats a real bargain for the $20.00 and $10-$15.00 fo shipping.

John, Powder here sells for $17-$18 a pound cept for Vihtavuori and their 2lb containers at $42 each!! For someone like yourself that shoots a lot, I can see the advantage to buying online. I used to be a member of a blackpowder club and our Goex was bought in 25lb to 100lb lots, group buys were the rule, and since powder was purchased in large quantities, not only did the price per pound go down, but the hazmat fee was inconsequential. But that option isn't available for individuals and smaller quantities, so I no longer shoot Goex, just T7 because of availability.

You can buy "surplus" (I call them mistake) powders for around $7/pound at powder valley.  You can order up to 48# of powder and primers on one hazmat.

I usually get 4 kegs of fast powder, like H300 or AA2200, they call them "DATA" powders, at a time.  That's 32 pounds  for about $240, enough to last me and my varmint-shooting buddy about 3 years.

Also, I've never seen my favorite small-rifle primer, Rem 7-1/2BR, in a retail outlet.  Sportsman's claims they stock them but the shelf has always been empty when I've looked.
