« on: April 07, 2006, 03:56:06 PM »
JSUT BOUGHT A SUPER 16 223 CONTENDER BARREL. HAD ONE YEARS AGO AND ONLY SHOT FACTORY SHELLS. BUT OVER THE YEARS I'VE BEEN LOADING FOR MY 7MM MAG FOR DEER AND VARMIT NOW THAT IM 50 DON'T KNOW WHY BUT I WANT A LITTLE CHALLANGE. SO IF ANY ONE HAS A GOOD LOAD I GOT ENOUGH SINCE TO CHECK IN MY BOOKS IN CASE OF A TYPEO YOU KNOW 3.6 GRNS. AS OPPOSED TO 36GRNS. I'M JUST LOOKING AT A LOT OF FORUMS AND FOR BUDGET REASONS I WILL BUY 3 POWDERS AND 3 TO 5 DIFFERENT GR. BULLETS THAT KEEP POPPING UP MOST OFTEN! ANY FEED BACK WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED>

THANKS AND MAY GOD BLESS

Hi Moose-

I shoot sillhoutte with my .223 Super 14 barrel. I have had good luck with the reduced Blue Dot loads. I use it in my 7TCU, 7-30 Waters, and 30-30 as well. If you do a search on Accurate Reloading you'll turn up quite a few loads.  JamesCalhoon.com talks about downloading the .223 as well

223 Loads

Hello Moose,
I have been loading the 223 for a very long time and I have found that 26 to 26.2 grains of Winchester 748 works great with the plain vanilla Hornady 55 grains spire point bullet.  I've used both Federal and Winchester small rifle primers.

I just finished loading and testing the same load above with the Winchester 55 grain Spire point with a cannelure.  That was a waste of powder and time.

I have several 223s and one in an Encore 21" barrel that I haven't fire yet.  I have fired the above load in my 14" 223 Contender barrel and it will print great groups for you.

Every gun is different as to the max OAL.  You can determine what it is for your new 223 barrel very easily:

You'll need a cleaning rod, a bullet, calipers, and a magic marker.
Drop the bullet down in the empty chamber and hold it against the rifling with a pencil.  Insert the cleaning rod till it contacts the bullet and then mark the rod even with the muzzle.  Push out the bullet, close the action with the chamber empty, and insert the rod again, mark it  again, even with the end of the muzzle.  Measure the distance between the marks and that's the max OAL for your gun and for that particular bullet.
Try 1/32 to 1/16 inch less than the max OAL for your starting loads.

I load H4895 in my 223, but had good luck with H335 also.  Lots of powders work well.
