7600 safety question
« on: April 08, 2006, 09:21:56 AM »
I just bought a used 7600 in 30-06 and found out the safety has been converted for left hand use.  Is it easy to convert the safety in these guns from left to right or right to left hand, or do you need to replace the trigger assembly?  I haven't pulled the trigger out yet (it may be self explanitory once I get it out) but since this is my first remington pump rifle I figured I'd ask some folks with knowledge of these things before I start messing around with it.  Thanks

I remember reading either here or the gunsmithing forum on how to reverse it.  Might try doing a search.

There have been more than a few people looking to change to left hand safety. The easiest  and most cost effective solution might be to advertise for a trade.

Thanks for the replies.  I pulled the safety apart and realized there is a slight difference between the right and left hand switches (the location of the detent recesses).  I will order a right hand switch $3.00 and convert it myself.  The whole disassemble/reassemble process took less than 10 min.  Seems like a very simple conversion.

Just wanted to give an update.  The information I posted previously about the detent recesses may not be true on all 7600's.  My rifle appears to have an aftermarket safety switch.  In doing some research to find a new safety switch I realized Remington only offers 1 cross bolt safty switch (part number 25115) there is not detent recesses on the factory offered part it has 2 groves that would work in either direction.  I don't know if my safety switch is an old design or aftermarket but it is different than the one currently offered from Big Green.  The current offering is compatible with pretty much all of the Remington shotguns and rifles with cross bolt safeties.  I pulled one out of one of my 11-87's and it worked perfect in my 7600.  Now I just need to order a replacement for the 11-87.
