Recoil Pads
« on: April 02, 2006, 09:25:23 PM »
What is the best recoil pad for my Remington 700 BDL 30-06? I will probally have the stock cut to fit, and was thinking a Sims Limb saver, I love the oneI put on my mossberg 835 but it was a sure fit since the stock was not cut. Any reccomendations would be helpful. I put 27 shots through it on friday and I'm quite bruised and swollen up.

Limbsaver works for me!

Limbsaver.  Heed gunnut's instructions here and use WD-40 to grind to fit:

Gunnut69-
OK I'll pass on a secret. The butt stock doesn't have to be perfectly flat. Use a new, sharp file and a staight edge(ruler). Mark with a pencil the areas that aer high and file them down. Then use a dremel or sharp gouge remove a tuny bit of wood in the center of the butt where the pad is to go. Leave a 1/4 to 3/8 flat around the perimeter. Don't remove too much, just a 1/64 will make getting the pad nice and flat a bunch easier. You should also check the pad's base with the straight edge.. I've seen move than a few that were not flat themselves.. Sand the edge(visible) of the pad with new sandpaper and a 1/4 sheet sander(220 grit) and finish with a little WD40. that's right WD40..it'll slick that pad right up.. at least it will the pachmeyer Decellerator pads.. Also be sure you thoroughly seal the butt stock's endgrain.. polyurethane or lacquer sealer will work.. as will Acraglass, epoxy or wax.

I went with the Pachmeyers, for the simple fact of I got it for free from a co-worker who has had the spare recoil pad for 2 years, It fit great, and I put nine shots realitively fast with no pain, little wealted from pressure pinching the skin, but other than that it's just fine. Thanks.

LimbSaver is on one of my big bores-a BPS10gauge. Fantastic product. Now I have a question to go with this thread about recoil pads. I am interested in installing a Pach 990 on my FN 98. Are these able to be put to the grinder/belt sander to fit? Dimensions are abit larger than the stock so I was wondering about the possibilities before I order one. One would almost tend to think most you buy can be fit at home if need be. Just a thought and a question.
regards,
Tim

The triple mag pad is grindable. There are limitsd to anything but get the smallest that will mould to fit the lines of the stock and grind/sand it to shape!!
