The great thing here is that there are many calibers that are extremely versitile and can get the job done from varmints to moose, even to small to medium african game.  I used to be one of those folks who thought that what I was using was the best.  But what I have come to realize is that if a shooter has confidence in a particular gun and caliber, then he will most likely PRACTICE with that setup and it will be very effective.  There are calibers out there that certainly don't appeal to me, but I realize that they may be very good for someone else.

That said, I would choose my 7mag.  Why?  Because of the results it has given me for many years and its versitility in loads (especially since I hand load).  Realistically, the biggest game animal I would likely ever persue will be elk and hand loads in my 7-08 would be sufficient as well.

I would of said a .308 but I just got a 300 Win Mag and it can do anything the .308 can and a lot more.   :D

Well, assuming I could have big bores and small bores, to go along with this one medium bore, I believe I'd choose a 300 Mag, preference would be the H&H.

Reasons would be you could use the big bore in beary places or where shots aren't expected to be long.  Small bore could be used for deer or smaller critters.  The 300 would be for longish shots for caribou, elk, moose, etc...  Use the big bore when in bear country.

If it had to one rifle for everything, it would be the 338 Win Mag.

If I had to choose one, hang on wait a second...I have already chosen just one. A Ruger M77 7mm Remington Magnum
     If I ever decide to buy another it would be a 7mm/08 no doubt a very fine round.

A CZ550 Lux in 7x57 with the Mannlicher stock. I gather we're talking ideal circumstances so in that sense I'd also have all the excellent ammo Sako & Norma produce for this round. The Europeans really know how to get the most out of this fine old cartridge.

I guess I would have to choose between 2 and quite frankly I don't know if I could...maybe if I could alternate them each year...my choice would be the 270 Weatherby Magnum...or the Ackley Improved 30-06....if forced into choosing just 1 by some crazy law...the 30-06 Improved...and I don't think I would be under gunned...or over gunned for anything...( well maybe for the lyinstinkinyellerbelly politicians that passed that damn law  :wink: )






but thank God we don't have to have just one....................................

I think,if iwas being limited to only one rifle,it would be my 9.3-64 Steyr-Mannlicher ST,as there is quite a variety of game species to hunt in Bc.From Whitetail to Grizzly and even on Coyotes it does'nt rip them apart when using 210gr Lapua Match bullets.Of course,it is a bit of an overkill on whitetail,but i rather have them go down with the first hit and a bit of meat damage than having to track them.I bought the gun when i was 14 years old and now 20years later i'm still as enamoured with it as i was when i first laid eyes on it.It never failed me and i never needed more than one shot,even when the schooting distance were streched past 400 yards.Getting to know this rifle and being able to handle it properly is the greatest confidence builder. :grin:

I too would have to choose the 30-06 . You can find ammo for it  just about every where, it is powerful enough to take any game animal on earth, has tolerable recoil  and  has plenty of range. Plus gun manufacturers chamber this round in bolt, pump, single shot, and automatic. You can even get it in a handgun, that would be a hoss! Heck, from what I have read it is even the most popular caliber in Germany. :D

6.5x55 Swed reasons, light recoil, very accurate, the SD of bullets puts it well ahead of other med. bores. Hey it will harvest any North American game that walks or crawls, jumps or any other means of movement. That includes those big Bears! :grin:

When I packed up my old panel truck in '62 to head west with my pard, I threw in a Swede Model 94. Although I no longer have that rifle, I've never found a need for another calber.  6.5mms rule! :grin:

for me it would have to be my CZ 550 American in 7x57mm, 20,000 Hornady SSTs in 182 grain, 2,000 Nosler Partitions in 160 grain configuration, 22 bricks of Federal 210 primers, 4,400 Remington 7x57mm cases and 157 pounds of H414 powder. That would just about do it for me. I only use one load in my rifle, and switch between the SSTs and Partitions for the same load. The load scoots along at more than 2,800 feet per second and has been exceedingly good on anything I have shot from wild turkey to wild elk. Shot one 5x6 bull at 325 yards (more or less). He was standing broadside. At the shot, which I slipped in just behind his elbow, he backed up two steps, sat on his butt and fell over without a kick. I have confidence in my rifle, in the load and in myself. Now if I had my druthers, I would druther Hornady would get up off its butt and make the Interbond in 162 grain in the .284 caliber.

About 1981 I did pick one rifle for everything.  Last year is the first year it stayed home and didn't go hunting.  The 340 has killed more moose than deer, a couple coyotes, a wolf and countless partridge.  Most , maybe 50% of the blueing is worn off and it has a fiber stock now.  The first stock split.  I have only used Sierra Gameking 250 gr. at about 2750fps. It has never shot a "store bought shell". :grin:  :grin:

As much as I like my 6.5's, I'd have to go with a 7mm, either the 7x57 or the 280 Rem.

It's gotta be about bullet's and the 28's have great hunting bullets from 139 gr up to 175 gr and probally heavier. Another plus is avaliablity of cases. How much trouble is it to come up with 30-06 or 57mm cases?  

Recoil of both is reasonable and factory ammo is avaliable.
