New project!
« on: January 24, 2006, 02:07:39 PM »
I've been working on this deal for a month, and it finally happened last Sunday! Picked up another Rem. Hepburn, in .40-2 1/2 (.40-70 Sharps Straight) with double set triggers, and a extra heavy barrel!
Only one problem, someone in the past cut the barrel off so it will need a new barrel. Great gun, with a nice bore. Too bad someone couldn't leave the barrel alone. Still, I think it was a super buy and it will be a nice gun once I get a proper barrel fitted, and back to normal!
 Here she is:

hey marlinman pitty about the barrel  how long is it now, from the pic's  it dose not look to short. keep us posted on it will be nice when finished.
tryed the smith buckhorn lader sight on the buff classic,it was a realy good afternoon did not want to lift and carry a steel target frame out to 200 meters, not allowed to lift anything heavy so soon after my operation. so i just set up drink cans 20 hits out of 24 of crossed sticks very happy with this smith sight did not have to move windge very lucky.when i get back to normal health wise, i will be able to shoot some targets and get a beter handle on how well it shoots with this sight

dodd3,
It's a 24" barrel now, and if it were just a couple inches longer, I'd contemplate leaving it alone. It's got a nice balance, but it just looks so "stubby" with that heavy, short barrel.

That sure is a nice rifle Marlinman. You should post pictures when you get it the way you want it.

Are you planning anything else besides the barrel exchange?

dodd3,
I haven't decided on the barrel maker yet. I have had great results with Green Mountain barrels, but not sure if they make an equivalent $5 weight barrel or not. If they do, I'll go with GM.
 KENTDEP,
Not planning on doing anything else to the gun, besides the barrel. The rest the gun is just too nice to monkey with. I hopefully can rebarrel, and when I rust blue the barrel, hopefully age it to match the gun's finish. If not, it will just be a nice old gun with a new barrel.
 Thanks!

Hi Saloon Slug! Sorry about the delay in responding, as I was waiting until I had more info to add! Haven't figured out what sights I'll use beyond the ones on it now.
Well here's the latest in the Hepburn saga. It's going to be back home soon, with the same barrel, but 30" long!
Now I hope I've got your interest peaked, and maybe a few wondering what I've been smokin! I did a lot of checking, asked a lot of questions, and finally contacted Dale Woody at Gun Fancy, (who engraved my other Hepburn) and we discussed making up a new barrel, and having all the original rollstamps copied to it. Dale sent me to a gunsmith friend, who does a lot of barrel work.
When I showed him the barrel, he asked, "Why don't we lengthen it, so you can keep it as original as possible?"
Well I've never heard of this, so I asked for some particulars. After looking at some barrels that had been done, and discussing my project, I left it with him to do the work.
The Hepburn now has the original barrel, lengthened to 30" by welding a 8" section to it, and then relining the whole thing to the original .40-70SS, and rechambering. He even cut the chamber to accept the .405 Win brass I use to reform to .40-70SS, and welded up the old dovetail, and cut a new one at the new location.
Once the barrel is rust blued and I can get it all back home together, I'll post another picture so you can see the end results! Supposed to be stronger than original, as the old barrels were mild steel, and the new liner is 4140 steel. Of course the extension is soft steel too, so it will blue to match the rest of the barrel.

Hopefully it's near completion! The barrel work has been done for several weeks, and the engraver has it now touching up the caliber marking on the bottom of the barrel. He also does the rust bluing, and hopefully I'll be getting it back soon!
Anxious to see and shoot it!

Well I got it back yesterday, and assembled it this moring. Sure a major improvement in looks, and John Taylor cut the chamber for the .405 cases I use to form from, so I don't have to cut the rims down, and shorten from 2.6" to 2.5". Now I just shorten, run them through the dies, and load em up!

I still have the original barrel. Except now it's 8" longer, at 30". John Taylor lengthened the original with a piece of steel he milled to match, and then installed a new .40 caliber liner in it.
Went to the range today to test some ammo, but got run off by a downpour of rain. Only got 10 shots off, so it's still in need of more range work, but at least I sent some rounds downrange!

Wow, that really is amazing.
Just goes to show that if you're meticulous and careful there really isn't anything you can't do with metal.

No requirement to even line up lands and grooves, as once he welds the extension on, he drills out the whole thing, and relines it with a new hammer forged liner! It has a brand new bore and chamber now too!

Made it to the range for some load workup. It seemed to like both the 250 and 400 gr. bullets, without a preference for either. I shot a 30 shot string of 400 grainers, once I got the sights dialed in, and I'm pleased with the barrel!
I'm going to try and find a vernier tang sight for it, and see how much better it can do with good sights.

That target is pretty impressive.
It would seriously put the hurt on any deer or hog that was silly enough to get within range.
The vernier sights should extend that range considerably.
I presume you're loading it with black powder.
What sort of veolcity and energy figures are you getting?

Thanks guys! Actually I'm loading it with smokeless powder. 22 grs. of 4198 with a 400 gr. bullet give me velocities around 1200 fps. Pretty mild, and hardly any recoil, so even a couple boxes shot still feels great!

Does that leave a alot of room in the case or are you using some sort of filler to keep the powder close to the primer?

It's not full, but I never use fillers. Too many other problems that I'm worried about with some fillers. This load has some room left, but not so much as to cause major fluctuations in loads.
I'm going to work up some BP loads too. Whatever shoots best will be used for deer season.
