Ya my Tasco T/V 6-24x42 keeps hitting me. by all reality the eye relief is adequete, so could a thick(er) recoil pad help at all? it's on a Survivor butt-stock.

Or move the scope forward in the rings??? Maybe quit "crawling" the stock?? The 3" of eye relief should be plenty if mounted properly, both on the rifle and the rifle by you! :wink:

Ouch!

I like between 3 and 3.5 inchs of clearance between my eyebrow and the scope. The length of pull does make a difference and a thicker recoil pad could make a difference. A short stock can get you into trouble real fast. I like a slightly shorter stock. That way it is not to long during the winter.

Shooting form and bad habits maybe part of the problem. You might be crawling the stock from a prone position or at a bench rest.

You might be crawling the stock because the eye piece is not focused properly.

I think most shooters have been wacked one time or another. I have been known to wear a sponge sweat band or rolled handkerchief when shooting from a bench or shooting from a prone position. I do not recall get hit from the standing position.

If you are shooting from a low crawl position you may be placing the butt so low on you shoulder that it is not recoiling into the shoulder, but under your arm.

One time my growing son was shooting over a log. He wacked himself so bad I thought the gun must have blown up. It took a few minutes to stop the bleeding. It was time for a longer stock.

Take into account that as you adjust the power setting on the scope you are also adjusting the clearance between the scope and you eye.

Crawling the stock is leaning too far forward in your shooting position, real easy to do from the bench. A more upright position would solve the problem if the stock isn't too short for ya.

I've been shooting my 280 barrel on my survivor stock with some hot loads,and got aqainted with the 3X9 Redfield real quick.I found that while shooting it that I was having to lean way into the stock to get a full view in the scope.After slideing the scope back were I could see without haveing to lean in,and hold my head upright it was okay after that.Sometimes you can get the scope to far foward in the rings,and thats as bad as getting it to far back. so just how should i 'feel' when sitting benched staring through the scope? i know i lean crawl into the scope so there's a possiblity

You should feel relaxed and not all scrunched up by sitting more upright with the gun sitting higher...at least that's how I feel..

Years ago, I went out to the range with a friend of mine who had just purchased his first rifle - A Ruger 77 in 30.06.

He was setting up for his first shot off of the bench and I says, "Hey Bill, you might want to back off a bit from the"......BANG!

He had a half a golf ball sized lump on his eyebrow for a couple of days after.

I got bumped with a scope on a 458 Win Mag once. Only once. Experience (And pain) is often the best teacher.

While working on my 158 Shikari/muzzleloader .45 cal I was working up
high-end charge loads with heavy bore size conicals (480+ gr.) and .40 cal sabots (350+ gr.)
Complicating things was the need to mount the scope rather far aft to clear the high hammer the rifle came with in order to achieve a low, close to bore-line scope mounting.(since remedied)

I developed the habit of bench resting my large bores very high so that I could sit upright while testing/targeting, as opposed to a semi-prone upper body angle a low rest encourages.

The only time I got whacked was when , at the end of deer season, I decided to 'empty' the unused load my Shikari was carrying. Casually throwing the rifle to my shoulder and firing at an old target, I caught a good slap in the head! Never happened when shooting in earnest...

well i moved the scope back to where it comes immediatly into full-view no need to lean forward or back. i added bout 1/4" length too.

I have a longtime friend just like that! We have known each other since we were 8 years old and we're now 52. Nothing has changed. I learn from his mistakes as well as my own. He only learns from his mistakes (after about the third time).

We have been best of friends. He's a barrel of laughs!! :-D

By the way, I too got up close and personal with the scope on my .280 Rem Handi one time. Was crouched behind a 4 wheeler using it's seat as an improvised bench rest and 'crawled' up the stock without realizing it. Ouch. :oops: I didn't utter a peep and tried to act nonchalont hoping my two buddies who were with me at the time hadn't noticed. May have gotten a way with it too if one of them hadn't noticed the blood running down the side of my nose. :roll:

I am curious, does that scope have 3" eye relief at 6X or at 24X & what power do you use at the bench? Most scopes of this price range have less eye relief at their top setting. I have used scopes in the past with this situation & this is how I took care of it. I would set the eye relief for the lower power, the logic being that for quick shots at the lower power & up close of course, I had the full view & the fastest set-up. For long shots you have to get in the proper position anyway & we are dealing with a stationary target, therefore having a little black around the edge is no issue IF & only IF you set the parralex properly for this shot. This allways took care of the matter for me. So, if you see that you don't have this problem shooting the rifle at 6X offhand, I think this will work for you as well.

well eye relief dosen't seem to change much from X but just so ya know i've got the thing set at 8x for the mil-dot. my method of judging eye relief is my thumb tip to my eye and pointer fingertip to the scope edge.

You can measure the eye relief with a flashlight, aim it thru the objective lense(big end) place your hand behind the ocular lense(small end), move your hand towards or away from the lense until the image of the light is crisp and well defined on your hand, much like focusing the sun thru a magnifying glass to burn a hole in paper, the distance from the image on your hand to the lense is the eye relief. Check it on the highest and lowest power to get the eye relief range.

Besides correcting the eye relief, it sounds like you need a higher bench or rest, or a lower stool. A good shooter I know uses an adjustable stool from a drum set.

Our range has an old 100 yard range with wood floor and benches looking right into the afternoon sun. We also have a new 100, 200, 300 yard range with concrete benches and floor, and no sun problem. Nobody uses the new range because those pretty new benches are too short. You have to crawl the stock, risking scope eye and the top of your shoulder takes a beating from the recoil.

Or, you can change nothing and make sure the scope hits your face the same for every shot. Then you know if your grip is consistent! Of course, that only works until your eye swells shut. You need a cut-man in your corner.

well our range is public and a adj stool i have not. The place has great people but only recently the 200 and 300yrd benches were retrofitted with concrete bench/seat combos, roofing, and gun racks. As for the rest of it its all warping woodwork that varies in height from the ground along the firing line, the 50yrd is alright but 100yrd its hard to find a good spot. the chairs vary as much as the bench does from white lawn chairs to old kitchen chairs from the 1940s-50s.
