I've killed a few with the Hornet. It does very well on them within calling ranges(0-100 yards).

Most people try to run the Hornet with the lightest bullets they can load, at the highest velocities possible. I also have tried light, and fast with it, but after years of experimenting, I've come to the conclusion that the Hornet shows it's best performance when loaded with bullets in the 45g-50g range.

I load Sierra 50g SMP's at around 2400-2500 fps, and this combo thumps coyotes pretty good. It nearly always exits, but rarely ever leaves a hole bigger than a nickel. It also drops bobcats with ease, and again, with small exit holes.

Ratgunner Hope my opinion is not considerd as armchair, But i have been using the little hornet since 1948 and have found it to be very deadly on coyotes at a reasonable distance,, In the area of 100 to 150yd range. If you hunt in an area where noise to the land owner is a problem the Hornet is by far the best way to go ( little noise lots of action ) Like Jerry said, use 45 or 50 grainers and you shouldnt have a problem :D

I found great success with the 40gr Sierra HP with H4227 for 2650fps.  THe 40gr Sierra HP was designed for the 22-250 and 220 swift so it acts more like a big game bullet at lower velosities.  I have used it out of a ruger 77H on fox and coyotes out to 150 yards.  Its a great little combination of small gun and small caliber.

I've not been using the Hornet quite as long as Ratgunner but I've a few 'yotes with the Hornet (#3 Ruger). I used the Sierra 40 gr Hornet bullet over 11.8 gr H4227 with a WSP primer for 2641 fps. Extremely accurate and quite deadly out to the 150 yard range mentioned. With the Hornady 45 gr Hornet bullet over 12.5 gr of H110 at 2886 fps extends the Hornets effective range to 200 yards and I've killed a couple 'yotes right around that range. With the 1-16" twist of the #3 I never got decent accuracy with 50 gr bullets. The Hornady 50 gr SX does quite well out of my TC 21" carbine barrel with 1-12" twist but I've not connected on a 'yote with it yet. Should do fine within 150 yards though.

There was a fellow here who went by the name of Lawdog who was a big fan of the 22 Hornet and used it quite a bit.  You can do a search on his posts.  Unfortunately he's gone on to the happy hunting grounds and is no longer with us.

I shot one in the ribs at about 125 yards. It was loaded with a 33 grain Hornaday plastic tipped bullet at 3100 fps (the bullets hornaday sold to Remington for loading in .22 magnums). The coyote went down, but when I got about 50 yards from it, its head went up. I shot it again and it rolled around a bit and died. The two coyotes I killed with a .17 Hornet died a lot quicker, one immediatley and one in about two seconds, both at about the same range. When I was a kid (about 13-years-old) I was assigned the task of killing a dumped off black lab that was running around the farm killing our chickens. I shot it in the ribs at about 50 feet and it died almost immediatley, that was with a factory 45-grain bullet. They were supposed to be going 2,700 fps, but actual chronographed velocity was only about 2,400 fps.

Lawdog has been gone 5 months, I posted and old thread because Jerry was surprised he was gone.  And yes, the plea for help with the burial struck me as odd too.  I didn't intend to open up that discussion again.  Sorry for the digression.
