New guy on site and a Contender question
« on: April 16, 2006, 07:25:40 AM »
Hi guys and gals.  I have been reading some of your posts and I have to say I think I might have found a home if ya'll will have me.  I purchased a contender from my father that came with the .44 mag hotshot barrel and a .222 rem barrel both 10 inch octagonal.  I have recently purchased a 23" .204 ruger that I used with good results on a turkey last weekend.  I also purchased a 23" .375JDJ barrel that I have not outfitted with a scope yet because I am concearned about recoil on this barrel.  I am thinking of using a 3 ring setup from redfield but my question is what 3 x 9 scope would handle this recoil?  Any input would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

First off welcome to Graybeard. Now to the 23" .375JDJ barrel and a scope. I had a 416 Rigby barrel on my Encore and I found the Warne mount and rings held up well. I only needed 2 rings. All my Encores use the Warne mounts and bases.  :D  As far as the scope the Leupold scopes are on all my rifles, be it light kickers or big bore guns, Leupold is the way to go. JMHO  :D

Welcome.........I can only imagine what the .204 does to a turkey.

Scope depends on how much disposable income you are willing the sepreate from yourself. Middle of the road ...Burris FFII 3x9 BP would fit the bill.

:D Congrats on the turkey. Head Shot?
The Burris is a great scope but the Leupold and others may have betteer eye releif for that 375. Good luck with it and good shooting. Grodon

The 375 JDJ doesn't kick all that bad; my encore muzzel loader kicks much worse.  I think I have a Tasco scope on mine with bases/rings I got from Thompson Center.  A Leupold would be nice but not necessary for this round.

Yes Grodon, well kinda.  Is was at the base of the neck.  I think I am leaning to the Burris for right now, but I still have time to decide unless I get too anxious.  While we are on the subject, what is the difference between scope bases for the Encore and scope bases for the Contender?  The bolt pattern seems to be the same.  I seem to be able to find bases for the Encore everywhere, but the ones for the Contender seem a little harder to find.

Texan , I have always used the one piece weaver mount on my contenders , the number is a 92A for blued and 92A-S for silver. Real good mount VERY resonably priced and the burris signiture zee rings , they have the plastic insert that allows some movement for scope alignment. they are only avail. in med and hi height .
