Handgun Accuracy and Muzzel Brakes

For you who have tried Thompson/Center barrels both ways in heavy recoiling chamberings, do you think muzzel brakes make any difference in accuracy; for the better or worse.  Recovery time for a second shot would be better but that doesn't matter too much in a single shot handgun.

No experience with a muzzle brake, only Mag-na-porting. Yes it made a big difference. My Ruger Redhawk went from a 6" group at 50 yards to 3".
I never even shot my 44 Contender barrel, just sent it in for porting.
If you are more comfortable with the gun you will shoot it better.

A muzzle break have never affected accuracy in any of my handguns. If it affected the accuracy it was the shooter dealing with the recoil. JMHO

Redhawk1 is absolutlly right. It should have no affect on accuracy of the gun at all. Unless it wasn't done correctly and it was damaging the bullet some how. It can have a dramatic affect on the shooter depending on how recoil sensitive they are.  KN

I had muzzle brakes installed on two 14" barrels. The first was a 7tcu and it shot great both before and after, just more pleasant after. The other is a 300 whisper, the brake completely changed the harmonics, but after changing powders it came right back into good accuracy.

Both barrels would shoot averages of 1" or less before and after the brakes were installed.

Both barrels were or are shot in Handgun Silhouette in the Unlimited Standing category with high rise mounts and rifle scopes. Too much fun.

Muzzle brakes, if properly installed, should not effect accuracy.  I can understand Joe's harmonics being changed if exteneral brake was added to a T/C barrel.  I have several barrels with brakes.  All shoot under 1" at 100 if I do my part.

In a related question, just how unpleasanet is it to shoot a barrel with muzzle break? I'm thinking of getting a 16 inch Hunter barrel which I believe means it has a muzzle break. I will be shooting it in carbine configureation by the way...

shoting ANY fire arm without ear protection is asking for hearing damage. A brake will increase the noise to the shooters ears.

I have a 7mm-08  15inch barrell and i am thinking of adding a muzzle brake on it.  The recoil is pretty stout now  will it help the recoil and help the accuracy any or am I wasting my money. Also who puts muzzlebrakes on these pistols do you have to get Thompson Center to do it or could SSK do it.

I shoot my .223 hunter in silhouette.  I am laying in creedmore position and the brake kind of bites my shin if I am not careful.  I have a 7x30 waters in 14" with a brake and I have never noticed a difference in noise, but I shoot it from bench with hearing protection or in the field when hunting and I never notice the noise.

I used to have a 375 win barrel in the contender hunter model with brake.  The first time I hunted with it I had a nice buck broadside about 60 yards.  I squeezed of the shot and felt like someone took a hot pick and stuck it in my ear :shock:    My ears rang for about 2 weeks!!! That was the first and last time I ever shot a gun with brake without ear protection.  When I hunt with my 375 jdj with brake I where electronic ear protection.  I would like to keep my hearing.

david white did three breaks for me 308alpo 14" 30-30 ack imp 14" and a 460 s&w 15"shilen nice work but were good ear muffs please!!!!!!!!

You can also send your barrel to foxridge outfitters
and have one of there muzzle tamers put on for
about 75.00...they work great I have three of them
.44 mag 7mm tcu and 30 herritt....

Muzzle brake

I have a brake on my Custom Shop 15" .260 Remington barrel and it is a dream to shoot. I do recommend hearing protection though.
