Is 45/70 allowed ?
« on: March 05, 2006, 11:14:30 AM »
Since many areas of Africa allow the .375 H&H mag. as the minimum caliber, would a 45/70 be allowed in those areas?

You can use the .45-70 on plains game.  It is the dangerous game, and energy requirements, where in many countries the .375 is considered the minimum.  In the end, from everything I have read, it is really up to the PH, and what he is comfortable with, as far as a dangerous game rifle.

After going to Zimbabwe, I can see no reason to even remotely consider running afoul of the law.  Run into an officer that is wanting to make example of a US citizen or just boost his career, and you wind up in a third world country jail.  How'd that suit you?

Why not just play by the rules of their country?  Heck, using a .22lr is illegal for hunting big game with in most states of the U.S., even though poachers have used it successfully for years.  Would you tempt fate by using the .22?

What most people that quote the 375 minimum do not also include is that you must also have over 4000fpe

If you think you can develope 4000fpe with a 45/70 safely in the heat of southern Africa then go for it. This translates to 1900fps with a 500 grain bullet at 458 diameter.

Also remember this is what the experience of a hundred years of trial and error with thousands of dangerous game killed has come up with as the "bare minimum" it does not mean always safe, always good, or always functional. .

Just ............Bare minimum!

Can anyone tell me why there is such an obsession over the 45-70 being a powerful cartrige??  It the weakest 45 caliber..   As I do own one and love it dearly, I just do not understand why people think it is such a boom stick..  If you honostly  didn't know I understand! But so many who do no better just do not get it??I am not trying to be smart just curious :D

Conley cartridge of Mississippi, loads 45/70 rounds that meets a 4100fpe in a 405gr bullet.  You can only use it in a Ruger#1 though.  You can't load up a Marlin in it.
But I don't think I would go hunting in Africa with a single shot rifle.

This is not an advocation of the 45-70 for DG but I just got back from SA and took five plains game.  The wildebeest I shot dropped in his tracks.  I was using Alaska Bullet Works Kodiac bonded bullets 405 grain SP at 1800 fps.

Brian Pearce wrote an article in rifle or handloader magazine.  In the article he talked about the marlin 45/70 he used to kill two cape buffalo with one shot, both animals shot through the shoulder. I think he was using corbon ammo. Good read IMO.
For me DG begins and ends with the 35 whelen, 338 wm, 375 H&H all three have good hammer factor.

Most guides that I know use the 375 H&H for coastal browns but for the average joe bear hunter 338 wm wins the popularity contest. I do not live on the coast so the bears here are smaller and fewer for that reason the good old 30-06 works for most animals around here. I prefer my bullets a little bigger than the old 06, you just never know.

You want to know what the 45-70 will really do? Check out
www.garrettcartridges.com
That's real life... that's the real deal.
Velocity is not all it's cracked up to be. Deep penetration with a big fat flatnosed bullet will prevail each and every time. Randy Garrett's 45-70 540 gr ammo at 1550 fps ROCKS! It turns the 45-70 into something I'm sure you are not yet aquainted with.
Guns kill people just like spoons made Rosie O'Donnell fat!
