Can't get my Stevens 200 to shoot, Why ?
« on: April 23, 2006, 01:03:10 PM »
I bought one in .243 and it worked ok but I screwed up the stock trying to get the sharp edges off. So I bought another, I can't get it to sho any kind of group ! It's a .243 I had to use a front extension base to get a scope on it. I've tried 3 different scopes I've decided the rings might be the problem, cheap off brand rings,  It will shoot little tiny groups with 85 grn bullets and 100's but The will not move to where the target is !
When I first sighted it in with Federal 100 spire points it would keep 3 in 3/4 " right where I wanted them. I put another target dot 6" down and shot some 100 grn reloads, one bullet went in the upper target and the other two went 6" up and right? but they were praticually in the same hole.
Whats going on ? The reloads I used have worked in every single .243 I ever owned.
Now I have an even worse problem. The last shot didn't have powder in it and stuck a bullet in the bbl. Two cleaning rod and a broken off steel rod is now in the bbl. I gave up and too it to a smith. Probably rurined the whole rifle. Guess I will have to start over again.

these questions you asked....ask the smith and see what he thinks.

as for the reloads, try new stuff and see what happens. i couldnt get my Browning to group until i changed bullets.

and no you did not ruin the rifle...savage barrels will unscrew and you can buy a new barrel for about $75 to $100 and have your smith screw it right back on.

Sticking a bullet won't usually damage a bore but the cleaning rod and piece of steel rod stuck in the bore is not good.. Jacketed bullets are usually quite difficult to remove from the bore.. I usually bore out the centers before trying to drive them. It releases the pressure and a tight fitting steel slug will usually rmove the remaining jacket. If the bore's damaged and the rifle fails to shoot well, simply rebarrel.. or buy another. Just curious, how did you ruin the first one? There are many things that can affect a rifles accuracy, and a bad scope is very possible..as is a loose mount..
